question for those with broadband in Thailand

Recommended Posts

I currently dialup on a 56K modem to the internet. Right now, I do not even realize the full speed of the modem when I access sites outside of Thailand. Inside Thailand things runs at full speed, but it seems the connection to the outside is severely overloaded.

So I am considering trying ADSL on a Telecom Asia line. But I am wondering if this will even help at all if the connection ends up through the same overloaded connection. Anyone with broadband have any experience with the effective speed you get browsing sites outside Thailand relative to a regular modem? If you have broadband, go to a command prompt and type "tracert yahoo.com" and post the results. I would be very interested to see this.

Here is what I get:

I'm using the cable modem from TA. At this time I cannot recomend it, seems like for the past month it's been really slow in response times. You will have the bandwidth available, but response is slow, it is ok and fast for large downloads but almost as slow as modem for normal surfing. I think you will get the same performance with ADSL from TA.

Here are my ping times for a tracert to yahoo.com, done same time as post (I will try at a different time to compare the results)

Now, can someone advise what this all means ? It took between 50 and 70 seconds to do the trace each time that I tried it.

My apologies for my technical ignorance. But I'm speculating that any broadband you have in Thailand is all gonna be "bottlenecked" by the trans-pacific line? And if you're mostly surfing websites that are hosted in the US, it's not really gonna matter how fast your connection is unless you're surfing Thai sites. Am I wrong?

Basically, I'm wondering how fast of a connection you can get in bkk surfing/dling US sites. I've used a cable connection before at a buddy's house in bkk DLing the latest OSX update. It was DLing around 25k-30k/sec. When I got back to the states, on my DSL it was 130k-150k/sec. So I'm wondering, how fast can you get with broadband in LOS?

That is precisely the question I am trying to answer. I don't give a rat's arse how fast Thai hosted sites run because I don't go to any. I am interested in USA sites only. For reference, I downloaded the 10MB musicmatch on a 50K modem connection and it was a 3 hour, 0.8K/sec per second ordeal. If I could have just gotten what the modem was capable of it would have taken under 30 minutes. I can only imagine how frustrated I would be if I had the same results with a super fast and expensive ADSL solution.

A good tool is http://www.tracert.com where you can run tracert from anywhere in the world. From San Jose, it only takes 2ms to hit yahoo. It takes me around 900ms or packets timeout through KSC.
