Flashermac
I just saw that. WTF? Looks like no survivors. ... A Malaysian passenger plane with 295 people on board has been shot down as it flew above eastern Ukraine, according to aviation sources. The plane, which is believed to have been flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported. The aircraft, reportedly a Boeing 777, was brought down by a ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said. A spokesman for Malaysian Airlines confirmed it had lost contact with flight MH17, which departed from Amsterdam at 12.14am local time. The flight disappeared from radar as it flew over Ukrainian airspace, he said. Sky's Katie Stallard, in Moscow, said media reports suggest the plane came down in the Donestk region, where there has been recent heavy fighting amid continuing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Video apparently filmed in the area, which Sky News has not been able to independently verify, shows plumes of thick, black smoke rising high into the air. An aviation source told the Reuters news agency the wreckage of a burning aircraft had been found on the ground. http://news.sky.com/...th-295-on-board
unit731
Now - what is the coincidence that this is a Malaysian Airline passenger plane? reportedly shot down in Ukraine A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane with 295 aboard was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in Ukraine near the Russian border, according to multiple reports. The airline, which saw one of its fleet disappear over the Indian Ocean in March, confirmed only that "an incident" had occurred involving the Boeing 777, which was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. “Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam," read a tweet from the airline. "The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow,†read a tweet from Malaysia Airlines’ account LINK
StoneSoup
Gee, there is a vicious war going on in Ukraine. Blood in the streets. Our normal flight route traverses the center of combat between two warring nations. Let's see .... we can divert our flight route to avoid the combat airspace - at an extra cost of US $5,000 in fuel. Or - we can fly into the hornet's nest, and chant "Inshallah". Decisons, decisions - what shall we do????? Boom goes the dynamite!! Idiots SS
Guest
Two Malaysian aircraft one missing without trace, now another shot down in an alleged accident just being an unfortunate coincidence. I don't think so, but let's see what the media spin will be, and what people will believe.
waerth
Oh fuck off with the conspiracy theories please. This one is very clear cut. Airplane got shot down because rebels thought they were targetting an Ukrainian plane. They twittered they shot down an Ukrainian plane at the same time the Malaysian plane went missing. They even twittered the area where they allegedly shot down the Ukrainian plane. Which is the same area were the Malaysian plane crashed. Also the missile system they have can shoot down airplanes up to 14 km height. Civilian airliners fly at 10 km height. No conspiracy here. Rebels wanted to shoot down Ukrainian plane. Shot down civilian airliner instead.

Aircraft fly over war zones all the time, usually at high enough altitudes and out of range of most surface-to-air missiles. If you banned aircraft from flying over danger zones you wouldn't have much airspace left!
