Coss
The Chinese have negotiated with the Lao Authorities, who, are taking out loans that amount to 80% of GDP to fund the Lao leg. This line seems to provide access to seawater ports for China. Oh and Yingy will get fresh vegetables
Flashermac
Nah, the fresh veggies were to come from Chiang Mai. Just a coincidence that Yinglump's gummint canned the plans for a high speed line from China across Laos to Bangkok, eventually to be extented down to Singapore, and instead planned one that would go to the Shinawatras' home town? China needs Imports of Oil and Gas to sustain its manufacturing and this was resolved with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Burma_pipelines project. Allegedly a Gas pipeline from Myanmar to Kunming China it also serves as a oil pipeline from Middle East ( they built a pipe in a pipe Burmese Gas inside Saudi Oil Outside) crafty Chinks. Saves them 3 days of sailing through Strait of Malacca. Most of the Chinese exports come from the East or South so shipment by sea is preferable to overland to 85% of its customer base. Flashermac
But the rail line would make a great invasion route, should the time ever come.
Coss
Has there been a major earthquake overnight and Laos is now on the coast? Maybe they just want access to future potential markets in LOS and Cambo, who knows. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me...
