Coss
Any one we know? ------- More than 9,000 foreigners were busted for illegally entering the country - four of them wanted by Interpol - during a weeklong police crackdown that finished Sunday. Police said of the 9,265 foreigners napped, 9038 had been charged with violating the Immigration Act 1979, 18 for violating the Criminal Code and 209 were charged in accordance with other laws. The arrests include Kristina Monka, 23, a Russian wanted by Interpol on fraud charges, was arrested on Wednesday. Grigory Lyaskov, 24, a Russian wanted by Interpol on fraud charges, was arrested along with Kristina. Working as a bank manager in Russia, it is alleged Kristina transferred Bt4 million from a client's account to her secret account and Bt945,000 to Grigory's account. Russian police issued arrest warrants and cancelled their passports and sought Interpol's help in arresting them. Immigration Bureau police arrested them in Pattaya. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/breakingnews/Thousands-for-foreigners-charged-for-illegally-ent-30271571.html

Coss
The article doesn't make clear that most of these are overstays, I think.
YimSiam
9,000 and only four wanted by Interpol? Can't be Pattaya, the Interpol number would be wildly higher...
YimSiam
But jesus, 9,000 is a solid number! Where did they put them? The only place that can hold that kind of crowd would be, I don't know, Walking Street. Or the Beer bars. Behind [the beer] bars, pending deportation. Pretty much where they started, I guess. Flashermac
That's my guess. If they'd entered illegally, they'd have no record of them.

waerth
From what I understood through my "sources" in Bangkok many where Cambodians, Laotians, Burmese (the usuals) and a lot of Africans as well as a few Russians and maybe 4-5 other whities. Guest
I know board members who like to point out any infringement of Thai laws, and that the laws of the country must be obeyed by all. Will welcome the much tougher stance on Thailands visa immigration laws. It is of course not fair on those that pay and have the appropriate visa for their stay. I have read that over 70,000 including farang were changed with overstaying their vias's last year.
