Need help desperately with meta tags

The keywords also need to be in 'text' on the page, preferably near the top of the page & .jpg /.gif buttons with words don't help.. matching the keywords with text will allow the spider to determine the keywords match the content.. this is to stop web designers from using 'Pamela Anderson" type key words..

Are you talking about the img src alt="text" declaration

i.e. instead of

<img src.......alt="loading...>

you do

<img src.......alt="Pam Anderson Spam...>

The other way is to add text the same color as the background.

Of course no one should try to manipulate search engines for his own gain wink.gif

Well, it currently looks like this:

In reply to:

<html>

<head>

<meta name="keywords" content="Bangkok,

Thailand, teaching, Thai, Thai food, Ancient Village, The Oriental, Thai

boxing> <title>Bangkokmouth.com - Bankok's biggest website</title>

</head>

<body link="#000099" leftmargin="20" vlink="#000099">

<meta name="description" content="Bangkokmouth.com. The truth, the whole

truth, and nothing but.">

</head>

It's a mess really. I believe Khun Sanuk already advised you on the proper set-up of meta tags.

Now, you really shouldn't mess with layers, 1 pixel hidden images, etc, etc. These are techniques that, to get anything out of it, will require you to work full time for months observing search engine behaviour....I don't think that's what you are looking for.

Think: "relevancy", use common sense and don't overdo it. If I were you I'd start with looking over your title and metatags. They are quite frankly not good.

This line for example, repeated both in your meta description and in bold letters on your index page: "The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but." This might look cute, but really has nothing to do with your web page (well, it may -- but not in a way that a search engine can figure out wink.gif) You ought to substitute it with something better.

Ask yourself what your website is about and use exactly that in your meta. Also match metawords with actual content. Make sure you have a good, relevant, title for your page. Write a meta-description that is, again, relevant and in proper English. Don't be afraid to use several sentences. -- "Be good to the search engines ánd they'll be good to you" as it sometimes is said in the business of "manipulating" search engines. wink.gif

I also notice a lack of referance to the words "Bangkok Phil". Considering this is how we know you in cyber life, it probably should be repeated on your web page as well.

Let me add that the importance of meta tags really is on it's way out. Many, if not most, search engines use other means for determining relevancy (mainly content and referring pages, I would say). However, it can't hurt to have metas set-up properly and in a relevant manner.

When you have more dough you should ditch the free host. You'll always get better search engine results with a domain name that carries it's own unique IP-number.

Hi,

"Now, you really shouldn't mess with layers, 1 pixel hidden images, etc, etc. These are techniques that, to get anything out of it, will require you to work full time for months observing search engine behaviour....I don't think that's what you are looking for."

Behavior like this could even get you banned from search engines. As you said, stay away from it.

Some good advice btw.

To summarize this is what search engines want:

- a title, preferably a sentence (or 2)

- a description, again preferably a sentence (or 2)

- keywords, not too many and they need to be relevant (not really that important anymore)

- content!!!!

The last one is the most important. This is what the spiders read through and what determines how you rank. Select one or two keywords you wish to optimize the page for, then rewrite it so they appear several times on the page. Make certain you have the same phrases in your title, description and keywords.

Things that could get you banned:

- hidden text

- repeated keywords (say 10-20 times the same keyword)

- redirects

Sanuk!

Thanks for the good advice lads (although I will admit that a lot of it goes over my head)

I tried out Khun Sanuk's formula as regards the positioning but when you save it, MS Frontpage very kindly automatically rearranges it for you.

I really don't have the first clue WHAT to put to be honest in the metatags and all the description stuff, so any exact advice that I can cut and paste in would be appreciated.

My search engine positions are pretty good anyway, so this isn't really a drive to double and triple my traffic, but I like to do things properly if I can.

Master KS, ( Kind Sir )

re: >>keywords, not too many and they need to be relevant (not really that important anymore) <<

I respectfully wish to point out that if you go to the 'cached page' on google the relevant keywords are highlighted.

Key words, like size & money, does matter! IMHO on google anyway, obviously not on MSN/looksmart/overture..

KS is like Smith Barney, when KS speaks all listen!.. interesting that one person can post a 'stance' & get rebuttal, LOL, when KS speaks we all just take notes!

Lub ur wurk tu mutt!

It is still worth adding them, but the keywords need to be used in the text of the page as well. They are however given fairly low relevance, even in Google.

Hahaha, maybe that is because I control THE BUTTON!!!! smile.gif
