Twas the subject of a story tonight on '60 Minutes' (the most popular and traditional weekly TV news show). Had the feel of rewarding their war correspondent, Bob Simon, with some R&R. He reported:

The program is applauded by both art critics and conservationists. All proceeds are returned to elephant camps, helping the national symbol of LOS to survive. 100 years ago, 100,000 domesticated elephants clearing forests. With depletion of forests and 1989 closing of timber industry by government, 2500 today. In interviews with two Russian artists who fled former Soviet Union 25 years ago, where they were renowned for political satire, to Thailand where they now serve as directors of the art colony, assessing and scouring for talent and promoting the genre, it was suggested that elephants are by nature artists, arranging sticks and stones in the wild into bizarre patterns. The random squiggles of the pachyderm painters rivals the great French abstract expressionists and fetches similar prices on the world market. At a Sydney art gallery, where the travelling exhibition of works enjoyed its greatest reception, a white wine drinking crowd discussed the brilliance of the artists and the emergence of a definite Lampang school, characterized by bright colors and a meditative style.
