paddyboy
A friend of mine said he read somewhere on the US State Department website that Thai whiskey has stimulants in it. Upon reflection, it seems that the nights I drink whiskey instead of beer I have more energy, but I just attributed it to the Pepsi. I couldn't find anything on the website. Does anybody know anything about this?
Old Hippie
Lots of myths/legends about the various hoch in foriegn countries. Basically, the stuff you buy off the shelf at foodland etc is just cheap rum, and not really whiskey. It is usually distilled sugar, the Thais refer to most hard liquor as "whiskey." Of course I could be wrong here, as I have been consuming a bit tonight...
My Cow Jai
I think this is an 'urban myth' attributed to Sang Thip (technically rum actually). Now is called Sang Sorm(??) I never drink it! God NooOOO! I'd rather eat my own face.

Adams167
When I first came to Thailand (1971) I was told the best place to drink Thai Whiskey was in the north .... because it took 2 days to get there so it was mature!
lopburi3
Bet that was Mekong with the date of manufacture stamped on the label. Sometimes you could get a bottle more than a week old. Mixed with soda/Sprite/7-Up it did make a smooth drink.
Guest
This has already been discussed ad nauseam on this site. Run a Search, and you will find the discussions.
Adams167
You're right, good old Mekong; and you could only really read the date of manufacture through the "liquid", from the back of the bottle. Finding a week old bottle was a definite plus. At that time I had an Australian friend here who used to run Mekong through a charcoal filter to get rid of the colouring etc., made a very nice mix with soda and whatever.
