jai-dee
What is more important in Thai culture when addressing people: age or generation? Like when my friends were introducing me to people of their parents' generation in the village, everybody expected me to wai first, although I was older than most of them. And if I marry a TG whose mother is 6 years younger than me, do I get to call my mother-in-law nong?
khunsanuk
Hi, Hahahaha, not likely. I'd say you would call her 'Mae' (mother) Sanuk!
Guest
KhunSanuk is correct. If you're married into a Thai family you address them on the basis of the age/standing of your Thai wife within her family. Your age is irrelevant. For instance an older brother is Pii, or maybe even Lung (uncle) even is he is younger than you. Only younger brothers and sisters can be addressed as "nong". As to the "Wai". Your should "Wai" first when visiting people in their home, as they should do when visiting your home. The older/higher social status the person you're visiting, the more respectful your "Wai" should be. If you're not very familiar with the "Wai" its better to avoid it al together.
