gobbledonk
LOL ! Thanks, whosyourdaddy - I think we all needed that Two more people were retrenched from my company this week, and two were fired for 'offences' which would have merited a slap on the wrist 12 months ago. Senior management are telling the department heads that approval for new project/equipment funding is based on the number of staff they are willing to layoff to fund the expenditure. The positive news for the retrenched is that they received a decent package, based on the number of years with the company. One of the sacked employees had been with us for 8 years - he got his two weeks (accrued leave) pay and an escort to the front door.
Guest
there are a few getting an early xmas present at my place of employment also. A downsizing from 120 down to 13 on December 20 (last friday before xmas) I have so far survived 4 blood lettings in the past 5 years but the unfortunate thing is that I have been one of the ones wanting to go. I think they are just trying to torture me. Not to worry, when comodities become sexy again we will have our day in the sun too.
jp1
And there is nobody in Japan who is able to clean off the bad loans, currently. Kamui, it's not a question of being able to fix the system. I'm absolutely convinced that the Japanese could fix their problems pretty fast. There are too many interest groups and, a political structure with a quasi one party system. Within the ruling party (more or less at the helm of the country since the beginning of the fifties) nobody is willing to test new grounds. Too many benefits at stake. History has already proven that Japan only changes if it is forced to do so. Sad but true. :(
spirit_of_town_hall
The way the worl mis going it seems the best option is to be self emplyed that way your future isnt dependent upon some neutotic woman in HR. STH
gobbledonk
How did you know we had a neurotic woman in HR :) Actually, 'demented' is a more apt term : voice like a chainsaw cutting through ice. Several of our recent (voluntary) departures have point-blank refused to conduct their exit interviews with her - its like talking to a creature from Greek mythology (Hydra springs to mind...). Guest
" The HR bitch from hell" must be a common phenomenom. Ours even tryed to make sure that none of those retrenched would be re-employed in our sister operation. Fortunately this was twarted due to her reluctance to deal with the miners union ::
UAL875
Several of our recent (voluntary) departures have point-blank refused to conduct their exit interviews with herHR is useless. Period. I tell that to the younger ones all the time. Fuck man, you are bringing back bad memories...when I voluntarily left a former employer I was being exit interviwed -- such a ridiculous corporate term if there ever was one -- by this fat, shoddily dressed, dyke bitch who looked more at home driving a dump truck than being employed in a MAJOR European bank. As I was reading some notes I had composed to "assist" the firm in the future that included analysis of the poor decisions being made by some senior managers, she reaches across and takes the papers from me and says "I am putting these in your files". We ended up getting into a slight shouting match which resulted in me lunging across the table and snatching (hard) the notes from her hand and storming out of the office. I may have been foolish to think my opinions were going to right the ship but no fucking way does my written opinion get put into a file so I can get blackballed in my field. I have another tale that happened just last week here in Tokyo. The executive secretary for the head of my department (difficult man to work for) went to HR to ask if she could switch jobs if something opens up because she was getting stressed in her current role. Pretty normal request in a large operation. The fucking head of HR goes to her boss and tells him. Then the boss immediately sacks her!!! What a shame. Fucking HR Losers!!! :: :: ::

I ask you this question because it's not that simple to sack somebody in Japan, at least not if you don't have a very good reason. Japanese labor law is difficult and very protective of employees. UAL875
jp1 - Japanese man is head of HR (all parties involved were Japanese) and secretary is Japanese. All the potential legal scenarios are planned out (i.e. periodic "performance records" are maintained and I am sure one or two marks were below satisfactory in the event of something like this) to avoid complications. I believe she was given more than adequate severance. Doesn't right the situation though as she had to go home and face mom and dad. FYI, I was using this as an example to show how HR is fucked up no matter what continent they are operating on. Cheers.
