I did my open water dive certificate at Phi Phi island. I enjoyed the course but encountered persistent problems equalising during descent. I was able to equalise eventually but only after spending a minute or two working through the exercises at each point where I felt pressure.

After reaching the planned depth fairly small movements in depth caused pressure to build and frustration at having to concentrate on equalisation again.

I'd like to dive again but these problems really do spoil my dive experience, in your views does the body become accustomed to pressure and allow equalisation to occur more quickly with experience, or is there some other solution? ::

- I think my problem lies with build of pressure in my nasal passages, i'd find loads of clear mucus in my mask each time I surfaced. ::

I'm sure Limbo will reply with some good info as well. But since I saw the post I'll throw in my two satang.

The answer to your question is as to whether it wil get easier is a definite maybe. Not to discourage you at all, but it depends on what caused the equalization problems to begin with.

Were you congested at all during that time? If you had recently suffered from a cold or suffer from allergies then end of story don't worry about it. Although allergies are more serious and might require some medication it usually is a fairly minor problem.

So the next question would be if you weren't suffering from a cold or allergies what other problem might exist. For that you may want to check with an otolaryngologist (that's a fancy way of saying ear, nose, and throat doctor).

The bottom line is that unless a doctor tells you there is a medical reason as to why you will never equalize easily, keep trying. There is far too much you have yet to see underwater. (This spoken by someone who taught on Phi Phi for 7 months. There's a lot more out there.)

Keep it up and don't get discouraged.

Limbo will have something to add I'm sure. He's now a bigger instructor than me. :( ::

Hi dreamer,

did you have a slight cold at the time you were diving? Do you possibly have problems with your ears when flying or had any kind of surgery done on your ears?

These might be influencing factors for equalisation.

It seems you did well tho, despite the time and frustration on your side, you were able to equalise, it seems you did do the right thing and followed correct procedures, so you were able to stay under and dive at a depth you wanted to be. Did you try different techniques?

Some people may have difiiculties equalising, personally I haven't met too many who have so serious problems with it.

I'ld like to see your answers to my questions.

How many dives have you done, just the four certification dives or more beyond these four dives?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the lightning responses i'm encouraged to try again.

I have no medical history of infection or other problems with my ears and no problems flying, my ears pop in unpressurised aircraft but I experience no significant discomfort following the pop.

I felt fine during my dive course, though on completion my ears were sore for a day or so, from the pressure i'm sure. My instructor and buddy recognised the difficulty I had and were patient whilst I completed the required 18 metre dive. I took a decongestant on the final dive and this seemed to improve matters somewhat - I may have had a slight head cold but this was not apparent to me at the outset.

The most effective equalisation technique I found was pinching my nose and blowing back through the tubes, wiggling my jaw had no effect.

On a separate occasion I completed a dive and similarly was able to equalise only after significant time delay. I felt no head cold on this occasion either.

I feel the pressure very early in the dive, at depths as shallow as 4 or 5 metres, I know it is more difficult to equalise once feeling pressure, maybe I just need to concentrate on equalisation the moment I get in the water. I've also heard of people blowing back through the tubes hard until the ears pop rather than gently as I read in the manual. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for sharing your experience with me,

Cheers,

Dreamer

Hi Dreamer,

it will help if you start to equalise immediately and don't wait untill you feel the pressure, say at 4-5 m depth.

Within the water column, the highest pressure changes are within the first 10 meters from the surface, so early and good equalistaion is essential.

Maybe worthwhile trying this and it may help you out.

Your instructor did the right thing as well, he was patient and waited for you, good on him and very helpfull for you.

It may be a good idea for whenever you go diving, tell your divemaster, instructor or buddy that you may experience difficulties equalisng, so they know they have to go down slowly.

Blowing back through the tubes is something I have never heard of, seems strange to me, I guess you would do this whilst ascending and if you would expereince a reverse block, this method might help.

Hope thisd helps you out, feel free to ask more tho, or PM me if you want.

If you're ever in Samui, let me know, and you can go try our dive trips.

Guys, fantastic thread! I can't believe I've only just found this after posting on this forum for over a year!

Anyway to the point. I completed my DM in Australia almost five years ago and the last diving I did was at the Similans over three years ago.

I finally decided to get back into it, afterall I'm living in a country with some of the best diving in the world and I never go :doah: ... too much bloody work!

I have no kit (it was all stolen in BKK back in '99) and am a bit rusty I guess. Do you have any recommendations for a dive operator in Phuket? I'd really like to do the King Cruiser, sounds awesome. Whats the viz like down there this time of year and do they still run liveaboards this late in the season (most of the schedules on the websites ended at the end of April)?
