Fair (farang) prices for Thai CD's?

Hi. Is 135 baht a fair price for a VCD Karaoke of a current Thai hit? Of course, they don't sell pirated Thai music on sidewalks apparently :-) So I went to a stall on Soi 71 at Suk. I had the title and artist of what I wanted written in Thai on a piece of paper and the guy sold me that VCD. It's a current Thai hit and he sold me the right title so it's OK, but I would have prefered a CD. Anyway, the guy would not budge on the price. 135 B is still cheap for a VCD anyway, but for future refs, I'd like to know what the normal prices are for Thai CD's and music VCD's.

And while I'm at it, I should ask where to buy Thai music CD's in BKK in the Suk area. It may sound like a strange question (like asking where to buy American music in New York City) but it's not obvious where to go. I didn't find a music store (but it was a Sunday and I was leaving in the morning) and places like Robinson's don't seem to carry much.

I'd be looking for stuff like Siriporn records etc... I know that next time I should ask a Thai lovely to point me to the right place, but I'd like to know where you guys buy your Thai music (those of you who do, obviously :-).

Thanks in advance for the info,

Uncle Joe

scorpion is where I go, same as manpong, you can buy a discount card for lower prices. They do not have everything though. There is a CD place at soi 69/1 outside the old cinema building. The stuff there can be had for lower than the face price and are not copies. Anybody buying copies of thai music is a true sinner.

There are a lot of recent VCD of siriporn concerts, some are cheap and not really worth having as they are mostly clowns with one or two songs. Stick to the Grammy releases. Some VCD are a LOT more than 135 depending on the artist. Jintara seems to be one of the highest as some of hers are 350 baht, latest one of hers 179, Job and Joy 179, can be slightly discounted-peter

why are calling me a hypocrite? i have never suggested people rip off westerners either, I feel that it's more important to suport thai singers though than multi millionaire western no talents. I do not buy copies of thai or western music, do you buy copies?-peter

Hi,

Sorry, Peter, maybe I misread your post, but when you say "Anybody buying copies of thai music is a true sinner." than it can easily be read as "but it is okay to do so if it isn't thai music".

Especially since this seems to be the practice of those in power here.

And as for they deserve it more (i.e. the money they make from their CDs), stealing is stealing, regardless of who you steal from.

And yes, I do buy copies, but I am not saying that one should not.

Sanuk!
