    The Covid-19 thread

The ventilator is used on COVID-19 patients when their O2 levels are too low even with supplemental O2 therapy.
  3. Remember, those that died at home were never tested and thus never counted. There are so many numbers not reported in Thailand. How full were/are the hospitals? How many tests have been given? Are there excess deaths during this time? Singapore has 34000+

You are forgetting the other variable in gas diffusion, pressure. Temperature is another variable that affects diffusion. https://oxfordmedicine.com/view/10.1093/med/9780198784975.001.0001/med-9780198784975-chapter-9

No oxygen. You are dead in a few minutes. The ventilator increases the efficiency of oxygen absorption so the portion of lung that is still functional can sustain life.

    The Covid-19 thread

If you're not getting enough oxygen, you die! So how can a ventilator cause more harm than death? If a patient has adequate oxygen levels with supplemental oxygen, no ventilator is used. If a patient is put on a ventilator it is because they are very sick with covid induced pneumonia. They are the sickest of the sick so one would expect the death rate to be higher in this group. The ventilator is not causing deaths.

You are put on a ventilator when you can't breathe on your own! What do you think is the survival rate when you can't breathe? That 10% survival chance is bogus. https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/apr/28/are-88-covid-19-patients-ventilators-dying-its-not/ A new study, which hasn’t gone through peer review yet, has been posted by researchers at Emory University. It looked at 217 critically ill coronavirus patients at facilities in Georgia, which hasn’t been hit as hard as New York City. It found a far lower mortality rate for patients on ventilators: 29.7%.

  10. What happens when a CV+ person visits a mall and 5 days later is diagnosed? Does everyone in that mall at the same time as the CV+ person have to go into isolation? Since the person may have contaminated the area, does everyone that visited the mall (after he entered) that day have to isolate? That could be 100's of people, if not a 1000 people.

  12. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/1920896/nigerians-stranded-at-airport-to-return-home-soon Three Nigerian travellers stuck at Suvarnabhumi airport for nearly three months due to country lockdowns brought about by Covid-19 are expected to return home in about two weeks. "They will fly back to their country as soon as the aviation ban is lifted," Immigration Bureau chief Sompong Chingduang said on Tuesday. They have been in the departure area, receiving food and drink from airport security officers and airline staff, since late March. Immigration cannot allow them entry because they do not have visas, Pol Lt Gen Sompong said. They were waiting for connecting flights to Myanmar and Laos when the governments of both countries suddenly imposed travel restrictions to contain the spread of Covid-19, he said. The airlines they travelled with -- Emirates and Etihad -- also halted services, preventing them from returning home, he said. But while Covid-19 affected many air passengers and millions of people worldwide, "the three have not caught the disease," Pol Lt Gen Sompong said after they tested negative for the virus. Though they want to continue their journeys -- two to Laos and the other to Myanmar, officials, who have contacted the Nigerian embassy in Bangkok for help, agree it would be better to send them home.
  13. Anyone know the procedure for entering and leaving the malls? From the vids I have see, you scan a QRcode that sends you to a government website to register. It seemed the site was all in Thai so if you can't read Thai it'll be difficult.

Well that alone makes me dubious of her work. We already no 94% of patients will recover with supportive care. Where is her double blind study? https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2766117 Question Among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is there an association between use of hydroxychloroquine, with or without azithromycin, and in-hospital mortality? Findings In a retrospective cohort study of 1438 patients hospitalized in metropolitan New York, compared with treatment with neither drug, the adjusted hazard ratio for in-hospital mortality for treatment with hydroxychloroquine alone was 1.08, for azithromycin alone was 0.56, and for combined hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin was 1.35. None of these hazard ratios were statistically significant. Meaning Among patients hospitalized with COVID-19, treatment with hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, or both was not associated with significantly lower in-hospital mortality. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/05/study-finds-no-hydroxychloroquine-effect-death-severe-covid-19

I responded that the extraordinary measures of shutting down the economy and self isolating reduced the peak infection numbers. It flattened the curve. The NYC infection rate went from 3 to 0.7. It is that reduction in the infection rate that kept the worst from happening. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. The morgue tents were used as well as the refrigerated trucks to hold the dead. These health care workers left their homes and families behind to work 12-hour shifts for three weeks straight in the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2020/04/22/coronavirus-volunteer-medical-workers-wrapping-up-their-stay-in-nyc/ AJ Gray, 31, is an EMT instructor at Lorain County Community College, and a registered nurse. ... She volunteered at a field hospital in Queens, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. “So we take the COVID positive patients. They still need medical treatment so they're not well enough to go home," AJ said. “We're on the training courts and you can't really tell it's a tennis court at all.” Working there, was sometimes grueling. “I've been here for 14 days. I worked 13, 12-hour shifts straight. It's not even the patient load is just being an all that, uh, the mask and the goggles and the gown," AJ said. https://www.wkyc.com/article/features/local-nurse-volunteers-in-nyc-field-hospital-for-covid-19-patients/95-fd11b12f-bdf6-4958-ac1a-13db71a70ee6
