Flashermac
If you had to be colonised, you were lucky if it was the Brits. Coss can tell you about the mural in the National Museum in Laos that shows the 19th century Frenchies stuffing the bodies of dead Lao soldiers and villagers into a well. I've seen actually photos of French soldiers posing proudly besides stacks of bodies of Vietnamese they had slaughtered conquering the country. Even in the American Revolution the British Army usually behaved well (except for that arsehole Banastre Tarlteton). Any "atrocities" in the Rev War were invariably committed by local Tories or their Indian allies. p.s. Need we mention King Leopold II and the Congo? Redbaron
If you read the history books gobble, it was actually the Africans themselves who sold the slaves to the brits/white man/whoever bid the highest (including other africans)... not that that makes what the dreaded white man did acceptable... just putting it out there

Not sure I'd call them humanitarians ..... Where on earth did you get that idea? The Spanish started taking Africans to the New World well before the Brits. And the first Africans in the British North American continent were brought to Virginia by a Dutch ship in 1619, the year before the Pilgrims got dumped on Plymouth Rock. (They had paid for passage to Virginia!)
JaiRai
How about we agree that people in general are self serving - across the board without trying to lay historical blame. That said, never been to NZ, but if I ever do make it there - where's a good place to get a drink????
