North Korea's Latest Missile Test

Recommended Posts

Looking at that graphic it appears the launch site was closer to Japan than N. Korea. This pudgy douchebag keeps pushing the limits of what the rest of the world will tolerate as he continues to starve his people.

Any predictions from BMs on the outcome of this escalation?

'Tipping point for nuclear war' - North Korea lashes out after US practice bombing run

North Korea yesterday lashed out at a live-fire drill the US and South Korea staged in a show of force against Pyongyang, accusing Washington of pushing the peninsula to the "tipping point" of nuclear war.

The allies held the rare live-fire drill as tensions grew over the peninsula following the North's first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test held last week.

Saturday's drill, designed to "sternly respond" to potential missile launches by the North, saw two US bombers destroy "enemy" missile batteries and South Korean jets mount precision strikes against underground command posts.

The North's state-run Rodong newspaper accused Washington and Seoul of ratcheting up tensions with the drill, in an editorial titled "Don't play with fire on a powder keg."

"The US, with its dangerous military provocation, is pushing the risk of a nuclear war on the peninsula to a tipping point," it said, describing the peninsula as the "world's biggest tinderbox."

During Saturday's drill, long-range B-1B Lancer bombers reportedly flew close to the heavily-fortified border between two Koreas and dropped 900 kilogramme bombs.

Pyongyang described the joint drill as a "dangerous military gambit of warmongers who are trying to ignite the fuse of a nuclear war on the peninsula."

"A small misjudgment or error can immediately lead to the beginning of a nuclear war, which will inevitably lead to another world war," it said.

I lived in Korea for a few years and when I got settled I never worried one bit about North Korea. In fact, the US press makes a greater concern of it than the person on the south korean street.

South Koreans have already planned re-unification as long term certainty. They know that the north can not sustain itself the way it is, just like east Germany couldn't. If the north was as crazy as advertised they'd have dropped a bomb and started a war decades ago. A quarter of the SK population lives in metro Seoul. What's stopping them? Over 25k U.S. troops living there as well. North Korea knows two things about a war. 1. It's unwinnable without China and China isn't going to help. 2. They can't sustain a war and a war would surely end the regime. If they are lucky, life in exile in China or South Korea pardons them. If not, well...Asians don't play by Maquees of Queensbury rules.

If there was a war it would be a limited war with an unsaid, unwritten agreement to keep nukes out of it. What will likely happen in a war? Some of the generals would form a coup. They are not going to go down with him, they'll do what the German generals did or tried to do.

Most of the time the saber rattling is extortion for food and medicine. The country is broke and what is never talked about publicly is that South Korea, US and China send aid in varying amounts. When food is particularly short, too little to feed the military specifically, adequately, they threaten war.The US knows they are not going to strike. But its bad PR if they don't do something about it.

The one huge change in the dynamic is Trump. In a strange way, his presence may be a factor in controlling NK. Obama was never going to take military action but Trump's reputation is so unpredictable the North Koreans may think 'this guy may not realize are bullshitting"
