  1. Interesting. As the article says, this attitude is not only for Muslims, when I married my 1st wife, a Japanese, 30 years ago, I was the subject of polite interest and polite acceptance amongst the immediate family. When trying to strike up business deals with other Japanese, I was politely given terms of trade that would not fly. On the positive side, you don't see a lot of terrorism in Japan, with the exception of the cult nutters that did the Sarin attacks some time ago.
  2. Tell you what, I took MLG to see the snow on Mt Ruapehu, and the walk up from the car park to the snow nearly killed me, lack of oxygen in the air with my unfitness, took it's toll. Death on the Nile 1978 - very good, from the days when they cast people to the part, rather than the part to the person. Peter Ustinov et al all very good.
  3. I see the French have decided not to deliver the first of two warships they've built for Russia. 1 - who in their right mind builds warships for the Russians? 2 - can Russia not get it together enough to build it's own warships?
  4. I rarely watch TV per se and MLG finds movies enjoyable. Munchie, still below sea level?
  5. The Frankenstein Theory 2013 - A bit amateurish - Worth a watch The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 2012 - very good The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug 2013 - very good The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring Ext 2001 - An extended version 4hrs vs 3ish - many more character and plot developments, shit hot! The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King Ext 2003 - An extended version 4hrs vs 3ish - many more character and plot developments, shit hot! The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers Ext 2002 - An extended version 4hrs vs 3ish - many more character and plot developments, shit hot!
  6. 12 Years a Slave 2013 - Good, fine performances, a little handwringing though. Worth a watch. A Single Shot 2013 - Moody, could be better. Worth a watch. Gravity 2013 - Surprisingly good, seen it twice. If you've got a bigger TV, excellent. Bullock is excellent. Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit 2014 - Prequel for the Tom Cruise "Jack Ryan" starring one of those Vampire boys. But good never the less. The boy has a future in acting. Worth a watch. Last Vegas 2013 - Very likeable, a little light weight but Worth a watch. The Grand Budapest Hotel 2014 - One of the best crafted movies I have ever seen. Some unexpected stars in bit roles. Very very good. The Monuments Men 2014 - Standard Hollywood fare.
  7. How did she know? I'm reminded of a Penn and Teller piece where they went on the streets of New York and showed women two rings, both sporting massive diamonds. The women were told to choose one. They were identical. No matter which one was chosen, the woman would then told that one was a cubic zirconia, the one she had chosen. All the women then wanted the other one. The moral is, even if the woman doesn't know the difference, she'll always go for the more valuable. I've seen this in Lao women, shopping for fake handbags in Laos. Even though they know all the examples they are looking at are fake, they invariably choose the fake that costs more than the others. It's instinct.
  8. But war is so selective and what you're left with is usually a cross section of what you started with, less some males. If only there was a virus that targeted all the kinds of people I don't like. Then the world would be a better place. Oh and I are posting tongue in cheek
  9. I'm with you and the world needs less people if only AIDs had worked maybe mother nature will come up with another one...
  10. Thanks lads, I reckon if it's Laos, I'll just rock up. But if it's Die Hard VIII - land, I'm going to I'll talk to their embassy first.
  11. For the sake of completion, here's how I fared. I got an email from the NZ passport people saying my passport is valid to travel up to and including the expiry date, I took this with me but didn't use it. The only problems I had were on departure from Vientiane when the functionary behind the desk (mommy didn't breastfeed me) was all of a flutter. "We have six month rule" "But I go to my home country" "You go to Thailand first" "Why would I want to stay in Thailand, horrible place, see my ongoing ticket to NZ" At this point there was too much information in his brain to be processed, so he got a senior functionary who dismissed his concerns with a flip of the hand. No trouble at Swampy. I've since been to Sydney from Auckland return with only 2 weeks left on the passport. No worries, Even helpful tip from the immigration lady that I should get a renewal soon in case I hadn't noticed. So, now my next question for those who've had experience. I have a USA 10 yr visa and similar visas for Laos et al, in my now "old" passport. When I get my new passport next week, am I able to travel using the new passport and showing the visa in my old passport? Any advice appreciated.
  12. I was in Swampy a month ago, and no waits for check in or immigration, not busy by any means.
  13. Yes, but would you want to? 42 ? Maybe a bit loose around the flange?
  14. If it's true - I make no judgment on this particular item, but I am aware of several NGO sponsored attempts to "rescue" underage women, that were seriously wrong. i.e. "rescuing" (kidnapping) women who were nothing near underage or prostitutes. There's something about Cambodia and " anti-human trafficking" and NGO or Volunteer folks, that attracts bullshit. The local officials want to appear to be doing the right thing and the foreigners, would know what they're talking about wouldn't they? ""The website for the Underprivileged Children’s School appeals directly to foreign visitors for funds to "make sure that most underprivileged Cambodia children are not denied an opportunity acquiring knowledge."" says it all.....

  16. I have no tolerance for intolerance, nuke 'em all !
  17. I won't watch it, but I'll discuss it. It's my favourite monocotyledon, though orchids come a close second. Some other pretty monocotyledons are lilies, daffodils, irises, amaryllis, cannas, bluebells and tulips. But I like grass more as you can lie down on it.

  19. Flew in to the swamp yesterday, no queues at immigration, walked straight to the officer. No queues at the taxis. Sky train is still full of Thais though, perhaps we could work on that now.
  20. I'd let him off, if a NZ citizen in Malaysia is allowed to attempt to rape a Muslim whilst drunk on Rama dama ding dong. Really, they think we should respect their laws and culture and then ask us to ignore ours, for a f**king c**t faced Muslim rapist wannabe ?
  21. For someone who knows everything, you are now showing your petticoats.
  22. I think so also, but my History is poor, anyone have any examples about this occurring before in History?
