MaiLuk
Don't know about the spelling, could be spelled gwan teen to get the sound. Equivalent to calling someone asshole.
khunsanuk
Hi, "Equivalent to calling someone asshole." Nah, usually not that harsh. I'd say it is more like 'cheeky' or 'naughty', especially if said with a smile. Sanuk!

Straycat
Language question, I know...but I'll pop it in here anyhow. 'Man': Is it the same word used in for example: 'man falang' = potato? Or does my tiny knowledge of so called 'low class' Isaan shine thru now? limbo
Hi Straycat, it's written different, but with for our ears a similar prononcation. Good question!! It's also different written as in man ke-aow. It's just IT. And, no, I do not mean those computer geeks Cheers, Limbo

jasmine
[color:"red"]This one would seriously piss me off if coming from the wrong person. This is a very big insult unless you are very close friends. [/color] It is quite common here in the States in my experience. We women even call each other "girl friend or girl" in some conversations at times. :D Farang is very common term and I don't think there is any insult behind it. It is being used in writings also. Having said that I have heard the tone in the word "farang" that I found insulting. Cheers! ::
