"What's the point. When it's all said and done all the vendors will sell pirated dvd's again as always."

...........................................................

The point is doing just as much as they need to keep the US happy. At the time a 3 months crackdown or something like that might be enough, later I suspect they have to shut it down permanently.

Cheers!

I wish the US would butt out of this! Pantip et al is not costing anyone any money in reality. Simply put, the Thais can't afford the regular price, so they will just skip it. The farangs who shop there will bu things if they can be had cheap. I for one would not pay the US price for any of the stuff I got there. So either way, Bill Gates et al would still get nothing, yet remain rich. If they don't want the stuff pirated, make it cheaper for the average consumer to buy! Of course this would mean paying the Dotcommers and silicon valley weasels a more realistic salary, which of course would help keep all costs in my neck of the woods in line...but I'm going off here...

I don't agree. Panthip is just the tip of the iceberg. If the pirate industry was shut down, the big players would probably make an effort in these markets - with lower prices than in the US.

As it is today they don't even bother because they can't compete with pirates anyway.

Thailand and pirates there is not the deciding venue. If the US can pressure China into a crackdown, much is won.

Cheers!

Microsoft provides fully localized Thai versions of several of its products, and even more of its products have both simplified and traditional Chinese localized versions. So the big boys don't exactly ignore markets where piracy is rampant.

But they do this primarily to win market share among businesses and keep up mind share. It's not really about the end user in these markets. There is simply no way a company could come into a place like Thailand and have a similar MSRP as in the US and claim that they weren't deliberately conceding the market to the pirates. Considering that they're not getting any revenue here anyway, why not drop prices to more market-appropriate levels -- they would have nothing to lose! The reason is that they don't want to have to offer support, etc -- they concede that they have nothing to offer consumers here over what a pirated copy provides.

It isn't Microsoft or the other big software companies that are hurt by third-world piracy. It's the local markets themselves, small companies in those places that will never be able to make any money because they have little market outside their native turf and inside their native turf they don't sell any legit copies, etc.

The reason is that they don't want to have to offer support,

At least you don't have Microsoft in the same paragraph. ::

As I was one who purchased a legal Win95 at over $220 at the then rate of exchange can not agree with some who think we have a valid choice here. There is a game company selling at reasonable prices and hopefully if the crackdown becomes something more that hid the CD's perhaps we will have legal software at prices that most can afford. But in the beginning the import was restricted to a few dealers who were out to gouge the market.

Today walked about 50 meters through the IT area next to The Mall, Bangkapi and had at least six people try to stop me so it looks as if they are off the shelf but not far away.

there are a bunch of vendors on sukhumvit between soi 5 and 7 selling dvd's and vcd's. (the vcd's are mostly porn). they're all asking 150 baht, but I bought 10 dvd's from 1 guy for 120 baht apiece. then he gave me another for 100 baht.

Agree with the hippie on this one. Who, be it thai or farang that lives here can really afford to shell out 20,000 odd baht for a genuine copy of MS office 2K ?? Bill G is not going to lose any sleep over it either way.

As with the war on drugs it will stop it completely for 3 months, then what? we'll all be back in panthip, business as usual and the 'Thaksin empire' will move onto the next 'source of evil', prostitution probably.

What is the point of enforcing and upholding laws when its only for 3 months? It seems to be a big propaganda stunt to me, play by what they say in the US and they'll get off our backs for a while.

The first few weeks will be quiet but I expect business to resume in june. Just my two pennys worth.
