It has been said numerous times but some people never get it [color:"red"] NEVER NEVER carry large amount of cash when you are travelling:

[color:"blue"] "Pattayamail 9 to 15 May

Foreign resident robbed of valuables

Another snatch and run theft on Pattaya streets

Boonlua Chatree

Italian national Francesco Gallo was enjoying a quiet evening along the beachfront in North Pattaya with his girlfriend in the early hours of April 29 when two youths on a motorcycle rode past, snatching a bag from the victim?s motorbike. The crime visibly shook the pair and ruined their pleasant night, as they were robbed of over 400,000 baht in cash, Mr. Gallo?s passport and a mobile telephone.

Approximately 15 minutes after it happened, the couple reported it to police in Soi 9. Officers radioed mobile units to be on the lookout for a pair of youths riding an unregistered motorcycle, which, of course, narrowed down the search to, oh, about a third of the populace.

Luckily, however, when police showed the couple mug shots of previous offenders they recognized one of the thieves. Criminal investigation officers are searching for the man and his accomplice and, if properly motivated, could expect to make an arrest shortly.

Sadly these incidents are on the rise. Thieves mainly target mobile telephones and unattended bags, as in this case.

The rising toll of victims signals that police cannot catch the thieves or effectively prevent such crimes from occurring. For whatever reason, lack of resources, not enough manpower or quality controls within the bureau, law enforcement is sorely ineffective.

The public should be aware that prevention is the best method and always use common sense when carrying valuables. Do not carry large amounts of cash or wear expensive jewelry."

and some farang never understand :dunno:, carrying 400,000 baht in cash what a dumb thing to do.

:banghead:

>>>what beats me is why this dumb guy change's USD 9,600 in one go

He is realy ass-hole.<<<

lots of reasons. firstly, it states that the guy is a resindent, so it's very possible that he did not change that amount.

secondly, people do sometimes conduct business on a cash basis and do have to carry large sums of money around occasionally. i have done so, and most people i know who live here have done so.

if you go down the bottom end of silom road many indians and israelis there carry stones worth millions in their pockets.

not everybody is on a holiday here, you know...

Hmm...well, without details, yes it does sound like the guy made a big mistake and from this story we can all imagine a careless Farang flashing a big wad of 1000B notes on Pattaya Beach Road and then stuffing them into a bag (man bag, paper bag, girlfriend's bag?) before tooling around town on his rented motorbike. ::

It would be interesting to hear the details. Many people carry around large sums of money in Thailand and never get robbed like this. It smells like some kind of set up to me, but then again, without details, hard to say.

>>>Italia is famous for all kinds of frauds and this guy must be having a big insurance cover <<<

now, c'mon. are you implying just because the guy's nationality he is a con-man?

listen - people occasionally carry large sums of cash, and others are professional thives. once a while they meet each other and things like that happen.
