Bumrungrad

This hospital completely rocks. I have recently developed a condition called acute esophagites I will spare you all the details. Basically my esoph shrinks and food gets corked in my throat making it impossible to swallow even liquid. This is stress related and only happens every6 to 8 month. In America they fix this problem by knocking you out and placing a scope in your throat to dislodge the plug kinda like a roater rooter. It takes about 5 hours to do the procedure get over the drugs and pain at about 2500 us per time.

I had the fortune of this silliness happening at the onset of my trip. I walked in Bumrungrad knowing exactly what needed to happen. I gave the emergancy room my insurance card and was given a room and a doctor within 5 minutes. 5 nurses looked after my vitals and all that other stuff they do. After proving to everyone that if I swallowed water it would come back out within seconds. They relized the seriousness of my problem. I told the doctor what they did in the states after a minute he decided to take a less invassive approach. He gave me a drug that would settle my nerves and dialate my esophagus allowing the plug to pass to my stomach...It worked amazingly well after about 1 hour I was discharged.

The bill read:

Doctor's fee 500

Facility 50

ER services 100

Medical Sup 40

Medicine 625

the grand total was 1,315.00 baht I was shocked I expected to pay at least 40 to 50,000 baht. Everyone was so helpful and I got to meet my Chula girl too. I was amazed at the speed to which everone operated at with a kindness I've never seen in a Hospital before.

JJushi, what you forget to mention is that when u go to a Thai hospital, you have to endure the lower level of Thai service.

Bumrungrad is very foreigner friendly - I would not recomend anyone going to Chula unless they can converse in Thai and have a spare day to hand around waiting to see someone.

Certainly for walk in service, I dont think Bumrungrad can be beaten. Certainly if your a regular visitor to a specific doctor things might be different and worth investigating but for a simple one off Bumrungrad is hard to beat for a visitor.

Virtually no waiting times and immediatte (1 day) access to top Thai specialists is pretty reassuring. At Chula and other Thai Hospitals, you cannot always be sure of seeing the top guy in his or her profession which is most likely the case at Bumrungrad.

I have seen the top heart specialist in thailand, at 2 days notice and for 500B consultation on the recomendation of a General practice doctor at Bummrungrad to put my mind at rest on heart disease. Pretty impressive by my standards. The doctors at Bummrungrad all are aware of who are the top specialists and pretty much they all do private surgeries at this hospital.

Cheers

I agree that Bumrum is very foreigner friendly. I suggested the Thai government hospitals for those who are very cost conscious and want the same doctors that also provide service at Bumrun.

Ironically I am typing this post at one of their internet stations next to the customer service desk.

BTW-for those of you who want to see some truly beautiful Thai women hanging out here is not a bad idea.

It was pure torture to wait my turn at the opthalmologist, when a few meters away there was sitting this total stunner who unfortunately was attached to a middle-aged Japanese gentleman. So close, but so unreachable... :banghead:

Can confirm that after a wait in the skin clinic couple of weeks ago. It must have been something I didn't see that brought them there. The food in the market restaurant is good too.

completely agree! I had my video camara with me for other reasons at the night's begining and got some great footage of my stay. I plan on making regular visits.

SkiBum,

I am happy you got a good result at Bumrungrad. They do have a specialty clinic (Digestive Disease Center) with some excellent gastroenterologists.

However, when you say "This hospital completely rocks," I cannot agree with this fully. A couple of years back, one of their doctors (different area of expertise) misdiagnosed me and mistreated me, causing considerable discomfort, not to mention the unnecessary, added expenses for 'useless' antibiotics, etc. After three weeks under his 'care,' he sent me down the hall to an infectious disease specialist ... he diagnosed the problem within two minutes ... of viral etiology ... antibiotics never should have been used.

Bumrungrad is a fine facility ... mistakes can happen anywhere.

Your right it's allways case specific. Something tends to rock one minute and hell comes the next I'm emotional when it comes to good news. In the us when I was in college I had a specialist misdie me too...for a total of 300,000us worth! Turned out he was on coke durring two of my operations with me.

I went to bumrun once as well. I was really pleased with the level of service and the low cost. The doc prescribed several meds. But before I took them I did some research on the internet, and decided not to take one of them because of the possible side effects. But with that said I was feeling much better in a couple of days. I was very impressed with some of the ever so cute nuses. I just love those outfits. Such a nice change after watching the western hogs walking around in wrinkled scrubs.
