BTW, I have some crap like this on IE (which I hardly use so it does not bother me that much; still want to get rid of it though) which set the homepage to www. whazit .com. Changing it doesn't help, deleting it from the registry doesn't help. I assume there is a program ran at startup which resets this, but have not been able to work it out yet.

KS,

I had the same problem with "whazit (online-casino)" after accidently hitting the worng button on a download-site. Spybot helped for me (after downloading the latest version of updates).

I use a program called "zone alarm" (you can find a download fairly easily). Has several advantages, perhaps the most useful of which is that any time a program on your computer tries to access the internet, you get a prompt, that asks you if you wish to allow it to. It also logs (and notifys you) of all attempts to access into your computer.

It may help you with software already on your computer (but may not, no guarantees as it sounds as though the software on your computer goes for the dialer), but should make it more obvious next time this happens.

A firewall won't stop that site installing a trojan, just as a firewall won't prevent viruses (the free version of ZoneAlarm, anyway. The pro versions etc may have extra features like pop up blocking..... recommend installing the google beta version tool bar - free pop up blocker alone is worth it. excellent).

SpyBot is great and will remove that program (which probably did dial up some high rate international number....), it's worth also installing a program called Spyware blaster - this will prevent any trojan etc being installed in the first place.

It's at www.wilderssecurity.com

It also has an MRU blaster function, so it'll clean up your look up lists, temp browser files and so on - you can configure what you want cleaned up. Plus has a Flash killer option... so you don't get any waste of time and space flash animations, and you don't get the continual screens popping up asking if you want to install it...

"Try to turn off Java when browsing smut"

"How do I do this? I see checkboxes for......"

If you're using IE: Control Panel>Internet Options click Security tab. Under "security level for this zone" click Custom Level. Scroll down the list to Scripting and select disable or prompt for each of the three, up to you but you may want to select prompt. With medium security settings scripting is enabled by default. OK>apply.

Also be sure you have all the critical updates for IE from Windows update site.

These responses, while appreciated, are not happy-making to me. You mean that we are "virtually" helpless in the face of this shit!? Someone can not just hijack my computer, but hijack my telephone line and dial an unknown number anywhere on the f...ing planet!! Basically they walk into my house right in front of me, pick up my phone and call up their business location and hand me the phone. "It's for you." Motherf...kers!!!

Hi Gawguy,

I was just browsing the Spybot site and came across an interesting page about Active-X. Basically it said that "Many dialers and hijackers install themselves using ActiveX applications." See here for the complete text.

To make sure somebody doesn't install a dialer again, you should change your active X settings. to do this (mind you I have a dutch language version of IE, so below you find a translation, and the literal text may be different).

1. Click on the EXTRA menu

2. Choose INTERNET OPTIONS

3. Click on SECURITY

4. Click on the Internet Icon

5. Change your security settings in such a way that Active X components will only be executed after you've said it's OK.

It maybe that your surfing experience becomes a living hell with these settings, but at least you will be secure. :grinyes:

Kidding aside, Active-X only works with IE, so you should be OK with these settings.

Cheers,

The site planted something in my computer that shut down the dialup ISP that I use, installed a new connection, and dialed it !!!!

GG, Are you using Windows XP? XP has a feature that whenever your modem dials any number, XP will ask for confirmation, thus allowing any unauthorised numbers to be cancelled.
