Hopefully there will be no lasting damage.

On a general note do you guys think that Thailand has become a more dangerous place over the last couple of years?

The Thai gals that i visit here in Bahrain kept on warning me before my last trip to Thailand in June this year to be careful as Thailand was not safe anymore.

They said that they felt things had become more dangerous iin the LOS.

In the light of what happened to Carew66, it's hard to say no.

On the other hand, I like to believe it's that we here have learned more about Thai internals, thanks to the Internet and this board and information sharing. Some of us in a hard or unfortunate way.

Regular packaged tourists would know zero about anything other than heat, humidity, smiles, elephant riding and spicy food.

They will recommend "Cabbages and Condoms" and cheap tailors "of the year" to their families and friends while showing videos and pics.

Carew66, bad boy, you did not follow the Lonely Planet Guide, ventured on your own. If I get a chance, I'll engrave it on your plaster. Wish you have none.

Its strange but I just sent him a PM yesterday after SofTH confirmed his location.

I even suggested we meet up, either at his place or mine, depending upon our availability.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope to catch up with you soon somewhere in LOS.

If the story is as Lusty reported it: "He was escorting one of them home when the aformentioned Thai guys emerged from a dark opening armed with baseball bats...." then there is one lucky American girl out there. Imagine what those assholes would have done had they caught her alone. Makes Carew out to be a hero in my book.

Best wishes to Carew for a complete recovery.

Interesting choice of weapons! Baseball equipment is not that easy to find in LOS. Still can't find a first baseman's glove....

Maybe the thais have been watching too many western pictures and think that this is the primary purpose of the baseball bat.

Sad to hear when objects are so wrongly used to create violence rather than their intended purpose...

Strange you should say that. This is what the police said and the bats were of the aluminium type with the logos down the side.

Aluminum with logos? I'd check with any local baseball fields/teams. I would assume aluminum bats to be ebven more rare.

About LOS becoming more violent well yes and no IMO. I think you come here as a vacationer and stay in the Sukhumvit/Walking Street areas you don't see too much. When you venture off of the beaten path you will see a lot and maybe experience it if you are in the wrong place and wrong time. I have been off of the beaten path a few times in my long stays in Thailand and yes you will get a seeing to if you are not relatively careful. Carew's situation was in defense of a woman so its tough to get out of that type of situation.
