Both the BKK Post and The Nation are running an AP story today (Monday 16 Aug) about the police closing Q-Bar on Saturday night, testing more than 300 customers for drugs (finding two suspected cases but not confirmed if the drugs were illicit or prsecription).

373 people tested.

2 possible positive test

104 foreigners taken to the police station and fined FOR NOT HAVING THEIR PASSPORT.

Social Order Crusade! Only bad people go out without their passports seems to be the problem now.

Cheers!

Just hear a report of Random Piss tests at Nana'e entrance with a 45 min Que etc. Any truth to this?
Yes; I went through it. And at page 3 of today's Bangkok Post there is an article about a police raid on Q Bar yesterday night. The headline is rather revealing; it reads: "No drugs, so busted for no passport instead."

There is similiar article on page of today's The Nation. (Sorry, I cannot find them on-line, but maybe somebody else can help). Both the article in The Nation and the Bangkok Post feature this quote from a police officer: "We do random checks at a different bar every Friday." Since it appeared in today's (Monday) paper the checks obviously don't only occur on Fridays.

Another quote from The Nation: "spot check raids are common at night clubs throughout Bangkok."

Think about it: if they are raiding places like Q Bar and checking bars every week throughout Bangkok, why would NEP be immune? It's happening.

"104 foreigners taken to the police station and fined FOR NOT HAVING THEIR PASSPORT."

Curious how much the fines were, and if the farangs were subsequently required to provide proof of possessing a valid passport and visa. Does anyone have first-hand knowledge?

I used to carry only a small photocopy of my passport and visa in my wallet while leaving my passport locked up in my room, but now carry the passport when I go to bars despite the negative consequences of losing the passport.

I was lucky I had my passport on me. I started carrying it last year after I heard about this same thing happening at the CM2 Raid and people being stuck there till 6 AM. At Q Bar they police were apparently ready for this. They had 2 buses parked outside. If you did not have a passport on you (NO other usually acceptable form of ID allowed, no copies either) You were hearded onto the buses and given a police escort home on the bus where you had to go be escorted to your room by an officer and show an ID or be arrested.

I don't know if there any fines handed out but I hear the police found no one without a valid passport or underage.

This raid was unnecessary and a perfect example of the dictatorship that awaits us as Taksins iron fist clenches it's hands around Thailand tighter.

People were in a frenzy trying to break down the door to get out. Police were uncooperative, rude and nasty. Refusing to speak english only saying "you in Thailand you speak Thai or you no speak!" We were stuck there till 3 am

The Q Bar management tried their best to cooperate and if was clear they had no idea what was happening or why and the police were just pushing them aside and tellign them to shut up and cooperate or they would shut the bar permanently. David the Q Bar owner was visibly upset as well as the local Lumpini cops that work for the bar.

Apparently these police were from the interior ministery and were laying down the law as they saw fit at the moment, making decisions and changing them on the spot about IDs drug tests and who and who not to harass.

:censored: the police!

HI guys

Im getting real nervous about these crackdowns. Im leading a pack of newbies over in Jan. I tell them how great it is in LOS. They will kick my ass if they get piss tested and arrested. I guess nobody wants that on there holiday. I think if things don't calm down we may have think more about Brazil or Costa Rica for some sanuk this year.

Passport problem is a big thing in Bangkok. Several falangs have been arrested with forged passports. One falang was recently arrested who was buying passport and selling them (pictures changed). He would buy a passport for about 10,ooo baht.
