If they want a drink they feel entitled to do that. If they want to have a late dinner they feel entitled to do that. If they want to party all night they feel entitled to do that. Now the truth is most of the time they dont do that much of these things, but the perception that they could if they wanted to is what counts.

Exactly.

If that whole nonsense would be directed against sextourism, they could have shut down nana, cowboy and patpong. But they are targetting the whole nightlife including the areas that have very little to do with p4p and that hardly any farang ever sets a foot in. apart from that ratchada and patpong, areas that are well known for the more naughty part of nightlife get a privileged position. All makes very little sense to me, if the aim would really be to clean up Thailand´s image.

For families a trip to a beach in Thailand is a way to expensive (alone the air tickets will cost them a holiday at a beach in Europe) and tedious. Only the steady growing package tourists from China might replace them. And they are the tourists Thaksin actually wants. They stay in Hotels, come for shopping and are easy to control, mean the tour guides bring them exactly where they should go.

You are looking at all from an US perspective. I have to laugh, there is a world outside your place. The cost for a trip from Europe to Thailand has been pretty much the same for 20 yrs. Thailand as a holiday destination is competing with Greece and Spain these days from where I live.

Its a huge flow of tourists, why do you think they are opening a new airport soon? I am pretty sure that the opening hours will be more relaxed if they have any negative impact when it comes to visitors. But I doubt it.

Cheers!

Well as you can tell by my nick. I live in Vegas. Indeed it was a huge marketing blunder trying to make Vegas a family place. Within about 6 months they where scrambling to reverse it. It has taken them years but they seem to be back on track. Although Vegas had become LA east ( not to be confused with east LA) it is still a company town. 35 million people a year come here, and most of them come here for the precieved anything goes nature of the place. We get people from all around the world especialy now that the dollar has been trashed by you know who.

Thailand should take a page from Las Vegas. You notice how all of the new Vegas advertisements utilize the "what happens here stays here" l phrase?

After the huge buildup in infrastructure during the boom years to lure families and subsequent economic recession, Vegas realized that family package tourists did not nearly spend as much money on premium services as singles. Casinos were hoping the volume of families would make up for the difference. They did not. When times get bad families stay at home and when they are good they are looking for bargains and services that strain resources and that they do not want to pay for. Single tourists on the other hand spend in both good and bad economic cycles because they have more disposable income. They will continue to spend on premium services. Bottom line is that most families are on a budget and they will nickel and dime you till the end. Single people have a mentality of I'll pay if it makes me feel good.

Vegas has learned painfully to play to their true market which is senior cititzens (usually single travelers)who spend their retirement incomes on slot machines and will sit an entire day playing as long as you give them free buffets; convention goers(usually single travelers) on company expense accounts; the other is tourists(usually single or without families in tow) looking for a bit of hedonism who have no problems spending their cash and credit cards to create a memorable experience

Most importantly these are your repeat customers.

Maybe LOS being such a page from Vegas since they too are hugely dependent on tourist revenues. How many of these families on package holidays will be repeat tourists? How many single travelers actually come back? I would think more of the latter than the former.

I know plenty of people that took a tourist package with the family once to Thailand and never returned but I know tenfold more single travelers that make LOS their travel destination every year.

I think zoning is a good idea for certain types of business but I think restrictive closing times is a bad idea. Tourists do want variety and options. Let the market decide what time these businesses should close.

Personally I will continue going to Thailand but I know for certain that I will be spending less money on a night out based on the upcoming policies. Too bad for Thailand because I spend alot of money on a ususal night out. I can't remember the numerous times I started my evening at 22:00 with 20,000 baht in my pocket, return to the room at the crack of dawn and realize I only have a couple of purple notes left!

Actually I wasn?t talking about the US but Europe. I flight to Thailand is between 600-800 EUR these days. Considering that families always have to travel during school holidays, speak high season, a family with 2 kids easily pays over 3000 EUR just to come to Thailand. Plus a 12+ hour?s trip isn?t fun at all with small kids. Do you really think that many families will take this burden just to stay in resort which isn?t much different to the ones they have in Spain, Greece, Italy, France?? Honestly I doubt it. Thailand was always an attractive destination for backpackers, adventurers, single males.

If they don?t want these kinds of tourists anymore, they might replace them with Asia package tourists, but not with masses of Western family tourists.

What kind of family holiday can Vegas be? As stated before, I am lost on the attraction for families there unless daddy is addicted to gambling and convinces the rest...

Its narrow minded to compare a neon light city to a whole country, which has a lot more to offer. Vegas can't even be compared to Pattaya, that place has more potential.

Its surprising that Vegas even got to be such a popular place in the first place. There is only sand, sand and sand there. I believe there was a lot of doubt when the first hotel opened up its business. OK, conventions, gambling, listening to Tom Jones and fast marriages makes it a nice place.

Cheers!

Since I first started going to Thailand more than 20 yrs ago, I have seen a radical change. I recall my first trip, sanukers and very few of them as well.

These days flights are full during the high season, and it ain't the single middleaged males off to PP or Soy Cowboy anymore. I do think that a relevant issue is what effect the closing hours will have on the youngsters going to party on islands. Will anything be done here?

Thats a more interesting issue than closing hours in BKK.

I guess you must not have been there in say 10yrs? Vegas has invested billions of dollars in it's infrastructure and entertainment businesses. Many properties are considered resort type locations. There are plenty of distactions for a family to find aside from gambling.

Maybe you do not know this but the American family vacation has changed over the years. Gone are the days of the family traveling together singing songs on their way to a National Park to do some camping. Today it is Dad driving his SUV with the wife yacking on the mobile phone and the kids in the back watching DVD's and playing nintendo. They are headed to Vegas where the entire family can be distracted and take a break from one another. Dad gets to gamble and play golf on world class golf courses; the wife spends her days in spas and shopping, plus the occasional slot machine; the kids sit by the pool all day or can play video games; when it is nightime dad and mom can go to a gourmet dinner and a show.

Times have changed my friend.
