THe hammer has fallen on nightlife

There is hardly anything in Vegas except nitelife.

I don?t want to get into a discussion of Las Vegas because it doesn?t belong on this board and anyway, I loathe the place, but I have to disagree with your statement.

While it may seem that way for tourists who visit the casinos on the strip for a gambling holiday, and what you say may have been true 25 or 30 years ago, - it is just not true today. Fact is Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the US right now. There are developments extending deep into the surrounding desert in every direction. Huge housing and business construction projects, most not related to the gambling industry. Many retirees are moving there as well as families and younger people looking for work. I don?t quite understand why so many people find it desirable to live in the middle of one of the hottest most desolate regions on the planet, but they do.

Last night, I spoke to one of my good Thai friends here in Chiang Mai. He owns and operates one of the biggest restaurant/bars in CM and the clientele is about 50/50 Thai Farang (farang sare mostly tourists). I asked him if he heard about the early closure stuff. He got very serious and said it was coming very soon to CM and would deal a serious blow to his business.

Now, his place, I would guess serves about 1,000 to 1,500 people a night - big place. The business is mostly dining and drinking at tables but they have a bar and live music. There are no freelancers or anything else that could be deemed naughty.

So, forget for a moment the gogo and freelancer bars in Bangkok. This law will impact bars and nightclubs all over Thailand, even in places like CM where there is virtually no visible naughtly nightlife.

My friend's thoughts are that this will have a HUGE impact on upcoming elections. He said, the general Thai customer base will be angry as hell to be told they can't say out past midnight, and all the employees of these places that lose their job will be angry as hell.

Don't think this is only about naugty nightlife.

Well as you can tell by my nick. I live in Vegas. Indeed it was a huge marketing blunder trying to make Vegas a family place. Within about 6 months they where scrambling to reverse it. It has taken them years but they seem to be back on track. Although Vegas had become LA east ( not to be confused with east LA) it is still a company town. 35 million people a year come here, and most of them come here for the precieved anything goes nature of the place. We get people from all around the world especialy now that the dollar has been trashed by you know who.

So it is a cheap place for people to come and let their hair down and do things that just arent done at home. Now let me tie this into the thread. People love the idea of taking a holiday and doing pretty much what they dam well please. If they want a drink they feel entitled to do that. If they want to have a late dinner they feel entitled to do that. If they want to party all night they feel entitled to do that. Now the truth is most of the time they dont do that much of these things, but the perception that they could if they wanted to is what counts. After all how many people vacation in restrictive counties (politicly or religiously) The way it looks is that for some reason the people in charge dont seem to want to provide that perception. I fear that it is just another way to creatre more xenaphobia and blaming the falangs for the ever more impending crash. I think that with the closing of even restaurants, and now the new (energy early closings) it's just a step toward curfew, and possibly marshall law when and if there is an election loss. I just dont understand what they are trying to do. It seems that by putting people out of work and restricting their ability to simply move about and enjoy themselves must have some motivation behind it. Maybe by creating a crisis, then the leadership can point the balme (farlangs) and then take strong measures against them, then allow things to get back to normal and take credit for solving a problem they created. Hmmmmmm maybe taking a play from "W's" book. Again it really has me stumped especialy the idea of forcing business's to close early. Just makes no ecomomic sense at all. Just drop the dam subsidiys and take the heat. Let the market determine what hoursrs they can afford to operate. Oh well TIT

That?s exactly the point! They targeting the whole entertainment industry from restaurants over karaoke, clubs, bars to the big discos, micro breweries and huge music places like coliseum and Tawan Daeng , even the comedians are affected as another poster mentioned. As the new law does not only put a midnight curfew into place but also curbs the opening hours, it will have a severe impact on most venues. Especially the trendy clubs and discotheques outside the zones won?t survive long.

The interesting question is when it will be really enforced. I haven?t heard any date yet, but wouldn?t be surprised if it will go hand in hand with Thaksin?s hypocritical war on graft, which is scheduled to kick off on October 3rd.

Impact on tourism will be huge as Thailand will probably loose most young tourists who loved the country for its freedom and party atmosphere. I just can?t see that they can replace them all with family tourists. For families a trip to a beach in Thailand is a way to expensive (alone the air tickets will cost them a holiday at a beach in Europe) and tedious. Only the steady growing package tourists from China might replace them. And they are the tourists Thaksin actually wants. They stay in Hotels, come for shopping and are easy to control, mean the tour guides bring them exactly where they should go.
