The problem that I have with beating up on the Chinese is that it rapidly becomes a lot like the anti-Semitic arguments of the 1930's : they stick together and make lots of money, therefore they must be evil. Add their apparent disregard for good manners (by our standards) and you've got a barbarian horde set to sweep all before them ....

I have been criticised for defending the Chinese on this board, but I am unwilling to condemn an entire nation for those aspects of their culture which we, in the West, find hard to accept. Their detractors frequently disregard their accomplishments while outlining their failings - how many nationalities could bear that kind of scrutiny.

As you said, there a good people and complete arseholes in every society on earth. I also criticised the readily apparent chasm between the Chinese 'haves' and the Javanese 'have-nots' when I returned from Indonesia, but I have to ask if it would be any better if Indonesia were a socialist state ? I guess thats another post for another time :)

yeps, definately.

many people forget that chinese were treated very similarily to jews for a long time by the west. i have a brilliant acount of the history of the overseas chinese (sorry, can't be arsed to go upstairs into the library to find out the title ;) ) which tells the other side of the coin - the slavers going up and down the chinese cost, catching them, and sending them off to south america, etc.

hi,

i have a very good chinese friend in malaisia. apart from sharing his incredible wealth of knowledge and teaching me, he has presented me with artifacts of considerable value in our common field of study. which i hold very dear, far beyond their monetary value.
