Crackdown Report: Chiang Mai

Let me add a crackdown report from the North:

1 am it is. Some strange discrepancies (sp?) though:

Gogo's and beer bars: close 1 am

Disco's (mostly Thai teenagers): close 1 am

Yesterday police did not show up, but many bar owners were scared enough and closed shop right on time (regular customers allowed to stay inside behind closed doors, music off, lights on)

Interesting scene at 'Fun Fun Fun' disco on Chiang Mai Land road (usually not a foreigner in sight): All lights off, but a huge crowd outside chatting on plastic chairs and tables, where some food/drinks are served. I think I'd actually favor such an atmosphere given how incredibly loud and smokey and crowded the place usually is..

Hash House Pub and Mad Dog Bar, where mostly old farang resident barflies go, are allowed to stay open!? They're really close to the bars with girls, so I'm not sure what the deal is. Talked to the owner of Hash House who said: "I guess we have only ugly old girls here. smile.gif" border="0 " Both bars are may also qualify as restaurants and lack loud music, and disco lights and all.

A drive around town revealed that the singalong restaurants are open, where old Thai uncles buy garlands for girls singing and dancing (well..) on stage in very short skirts. Could be an interesting alternative, girls are far far prettier than in the farang bars anyway.

Finally, what's happening at Khao San Road in Bangkok? Also mandotory closing at 1am?

Cheers,

Chanchao

I'm here too. Space Bubble disco connected to the PornPing hotel closed at 2am last night but partially turned off their neon sign at 1:30. I had heard that this is the disco for freelancers after the bar beers close but I never really saw anything besides a bunch of regular gorgeous Thai teenage girls (with their Thai boyfriends). A few groups of girls alone but it probably is a waste of time. Did see a few late 30/early 40 farang (sex?)tourists trolling around but they did not seem to have any luck. The late 20's early 30's (backpacker?)tourists did not seem to be doing any better.

There are basically 3Gogo's. Spotlight on Kotchasarn Rd.(couple 7's, saw one 8 last night), Cosy Corner (don't let the quiet bar beer exterior fool you) on MoonMuang Rd.(basically same quality as Spotlight),and a mostly Thai Gogo just off Loi Kroh Rd. behind the Mae Ping Hotel called StarSix. Follow the pink neon lights upstairs. The downstairs part is empty but don't let that fool you. They want 100baht to get in but that includes 1 drink and your farang money is very welcome. Mostly swine but there were a couple stunners in there last night and maybe one or two 7's. Very dark and the girls seemed kinda hardcore. I didn't like the atmosphere too much.

There is another one called Bunny Club beside the Downtown Inn and the night market but it was completely empty every time I checked at various times of night the last two nights.

The best Bar Beers are on Loi Kroh Rd right by Kotchasarn Rd. but the girlie scene in general is no comparison with Bkk or Pattaya. By the same token you won't be lonely either and should be able to find something to your liking if you are not extremely picky and spoiled by the Bkk/Pattaya scene. All the girlie places are with walking distance of each other.

Are there really a lot of farang-scene freelancers in C. Mai? Even after bars close?

I am in Chiang Mai since a couple of days...I've seen and met some freelancers here, but -- o'boy -- far from the Sukhumvit density :-)

There's one (yes, one, no more as far as I know) sad looking katoey walking the streets every night hungry for action :-))

The athmospere in C Mai is kind of nice, everything is so much cheeper and BG:s are not as pushy. I like that! There are a few very nice looking girls -- and taking the non-pushiness in account they will give you a good impression. However, I have to say that the Thai notion of Chiang Mai girls beeing so pretty is a hype, IMHO. Maybe, there's something wrong with me -- but I really do like the Isaan girls and can't really see what it is that make Chiang Mai girls so special (although, perhaps these girls do not have that Isaan under-nourished look). ;-)

Hehe, nightlife here though is pretty sad compared to BKK...almost every bar is empty all night long at this time of the year. And the crack-down is really evident. At many places here however you can till order you liqour after 1:00. It's just that the door will be closed, lights off and no music.

Thanks on the go-go tips...I'll have to check out those other places than Spotlight. Spotlight in itself is like a morgue compared to NEP :-))))

well-worded opinion of Spotlight. Actually, some of the girls working in C. Mai farang oriented bars are still from Issan, you may want to poll around a bit and confirm or not while nightlifing. Under-nourrished? You mean smaller, i guess...

The one next to the Downtown in is called "Bunny Club" and the reason it's empty is.. that.. the German owner ("Hansi") got killed in a car accident together with a German journalist while driving back from Doi Suthep. Someone said it was because of a mud-slide, but knowing Hansi who drives a '60-something Mustang convertible, he may have been going a bit fast as well.

Anyway, that's why the place is all in mourning now. I meet some of the girls who used to work there all over town now; not sure if it will re-open, and if so, if it will be the same as before.

By the way, did you know the coffee at Spotlight is excellent?? smile.gif" border="0 They do have a few (3 and a half) very attractive girls there as well. The place has it's nights.

Cheers,

Chanchao

sorry to hear about Hansi. I guess my grey opinion of Spotlight is due to the fact that I had good times there, years ago, before they had the gogo room, and every time i've been there lately, i try to beat the record of staying the longest before any girl comes to talk to me. record is 2 hours and 20 minutes so far, can do better, i think. LOL.

I remember one night in 91, when the girls started beating up on a big fat guy. the blows were making a chump-chump noise, and the guy would just not budge. One of the weirdest memories of my trips. Chump-chump, i remember it as if it was yesterday. Hey, Chanchao, have you ever met that c.mai girl who had a belgian citizenship and used to hang around Loy kro and neighbouring bars. Upon having changed nationality, she had to do the 3-month trip to the border like a farang. Ah! too long ago, probably... How about Sujarit Srithep (Tim), do you know her? Cheers

I edited my original post. The correct name for the GoGo in question is in fact the Bunny Club. Thanks for the explanation as too why there are no customers. I did get a few "hello, welcomes" when I went by so I don't know whats up with that if they are closed. Maybe force of habit.

Yes the Chiang Mai scene is very low key and spotty compared to Bkk/Pattaya but in a strange way it is kinda nice at the same time. You really get a better sense of what day to day life is like for the average middle class Thai and it does not seem too bad at all. Many of them seem to be fairly content. The people here are more friendly and down to earth than what you see in Bangkok. I think the quality of life (with the surrounding mountains etc. and less traffic) is much better than in Bangkok too. People will actually want to talk to you and offer advice without wanting to sell you something. I see a lot of Thai's in the same restaurants, bars, gogos, discos etc. that the farangs hang out in. This mixing of Thai's and farangs is much rarer in Bangkok/Pattaya especially in the girlie bars.

Went up to the summit of Doi Pui mountain yesterday on my rented 100cc Moped and got lost in the jungle on some steep muddy 4x4 road. Eventually found my way out on the other side of the mountain with the help of some very friendly hilltribe farmers. Quite an adventure but I would not recommend it to everyone (especially during Poppy season). Some of the remote backcountry valleys are spectacular though.

Anyway, come to Chiang Mai to explore the surrounding area and relax in the Bar Beers afterwards but don't come if you just want the girlie scene. I think that's about the best advice I can offer
