Go-go bars? I thought there were only 2 or 3 of these in all of CM. I almost always do, just because I don't want to make them mad, but the places are relatively expensive. I also checked out the fishbowl at Ping Payom. Who goes to these overpriced places? Why would anyone go there and pay 1300-1500 when Sayuri has better girls for just 800? Each time I've gone to one of these hotel fishbowls (like CM Hills, Ping Payom...Phucome was more reasonable at 900, or 1500 for the "superstars," who seemed to me no better looking than the regular girls) I have been practically the only person there. Do these girls get any work at all? Do they rely on the occasional sucker and this pays the bills for them? I don't see how they can be making a living. I think it's called Shen Yee Karaoke. Because of that visit my opinion of the action in Chiang Mai has changed overnight! It is in fact there in quantity and quality but you have to change your tactics and go to the more Thai oriented places. After walking through the dark alley opposite the President hotel I saw the two lovely visions standing at the door of the Building to greet me. Both were 8's that I would have no hesitation in taking but automatically assumed they did not go with customers. Neither could speak English but that was ok. They made it obvious that my Farang money was welcome which was all that mattered. I was escorted to the first floor Karaoke bar which was empty and no sign of any other girls. I saw a picture on the wall that showed a bunch of girls and said Floor 1,3 so I pointed upstairs. She took me to floor 3 which is a nicely decorated Karaoke lounge and there were maybe 3 or 4 Thai guys and about 15 very nice looking girls all dolled up sitting next to the door behind some kind of bar. My initial reaction was that the quality of these girls was a marked improvement from the farang places I had been going to and I immediately decided to stay and see how things worked. They sat me down at one of several red couches they have scattered about the room and one of the 4(yes 4) mamasans approached me and asked if I wanted to have a girl sit with me. I asked her to explain how things work with associated costs and assuming I understood correctly it works like this. To have a girl sit with you is 200baht an hour. If you want more privacy they have 7 VIP rooms which you can use for 250baht an hour for the first hour and then 100baht an hour after that. The VIP rooms are much more private but I don't think anything goes on in there beyond karaoke and maybe some light to heavy petting depending on how you get along. If you want to take the girl out it is 2000baht which I believe you pay directly to the house before leaving. The nice thing about this is that you can probably put it on your credit card LOL. The girl will stay with you till at least 6am. I chose one of the sweet looking girls that was giving me luvy duvy eyes and she came and sat down with me. Without my being asked she automatically received a lady drink and I ordered a beer. Her English was limited but we managed to communicate fairly well. I kinda liked being able to talk without that disco crap blasting in my ears like you get in the farang bars. You just have to learn to put up with the karaoke music and bad singing from the Thai guys but it is not too loud and fairly easy to tune out. Anyway we sat there and talked, cuddled, smooched,and even did a little light petting which looked to be what most of the Thai guys were doing with their girls. I thought I got the pick of the litter but after awhile I got to see some of the other girls walk by who were either sitting behind the bar or with customers and there were definitely some certified stunners in there. Your pick for the evening will even escort you to the bathroom. Anyway after about an hour and a half I decided that this was enough of an adventure for one night and passed on the takeout. Total bill for about 1.5 hours, 1 beer and 1 lady drink was 400baht. Don't know how they came up with that total because I did not look at the bill too closely. Anyway, when I went back downstairs I checked out the Karaoke bar which looked to have a couple more customers. There were a couple 8's sitting outside the bar and the two beauties were still standing outside. A mamasan saw me staring at them, approached me and said, "which girl you want". "Pick any girl" and suprisingly she pointed to the 2 girls at the door in addition to the 2 sitting outside the bar. I have had lots of experience with hello girls in farang places and have generally found that they either don't go back to the hotel with customers or want more money but in this place I only pay the house. Maybe next time I'll find out or maybe someone else can go there and find out. One more thing, everyone I asked said the place closed at 3am. Anyway, considering your going to spend 1500LT+500BF+drinks etc. for a gogo girl this Karaoke lounge does not seem too much more expensive. After I left the Karaoke place I checked out the President hotel coffee shop/restaurant. They have pictures of all their dancing girls outside and there must have been about 30-40 of them. This was another different experience. There were maybe 20-30 beautiful girls dancing on a small stage in unison. Not gogo dancing but kinda more traditional dancing is the best I can describe it. There were hardly any customers inside and these girls looked even better than the Karaoke girls. I had trouble finding someone who spoke English but, again, if I understood correctly, you can have one of the girls sit with you for about 300-400baht an hour + lady drinks plus whatever else they can manage to get out of you. The way she put it was "also maybe a flower or present up to you". When I asked if the girls go back to the hotel with the customers she told me that it was up to the girl. In my mind that means it is a very BIG maybe and probably at a price. Anyway, yet another option but probably more expensive with no guarantee she will go with you. After seeing the quality in these places I think I'll have to try visiting more. Anyone know of any good ones in Bkk? Cheers, Chanchao[/QB] Chanchao, I was in Kao San last Saturday in Gullivers. There was a big sign above the bar informing the customers that last orders was 12: 45 and out by 1 am. It was just starting to get lively with happy hour prices, the atmousphere was desperate. I walked down the strip just after 1 and everywhere was closed. A lot of bewildered, jet lagged backpackers wandering around aimlessly, even 7 11 won't sell booze after closing so I'm told. A very sad situation indeed. There are lots of other karaoke places in CM, some of them little more than brothels (like Madame Fluke's) What would this sort of service cost you in Bangkok? We really need a freelancer bar in CM! pattaya127 Posted August 23, 2001 Report Share Posted August 23, 2001 I'd like to add that prices upcountry are not usually cheaper than BKK or Pattaya. i think because this is a thai scene (not the ramshackle brothel sort), and Thais easily spend their money when out with their buddies. Another reason could be that the heavy competition in Bkk/Pattaya keeps the prices down, drinks and girls, much less competitionin the provinces. A real night out in Ubon will cost me over 1000 bahts in drinks, but not so in Pattaya, where i can move around a lot, and not sit down and being coaxed to do as the thais do (nothing as out-of-place as a farang sitting alone nursing a beer for an hour, upcountry! CM Hills is also 900 baht, but the manager/ papasan is an incredible pain in the ass. Also they don't offer body massage, just a bathe & screw. I also agree with Pattaya127 that up country isn't necessarily cheaper unless you seek out the real lo-range places. I would say that at the low end you will be talking ~1,800-2,000 Baht, high end 4-5K+ Baht I suppose. The thing with karaoke bars is that in the majority of them it is up to the girl whether or not she sleeps with you. Paying the required amount of drinks to get her out (it's called "LC", no clue what it means) does not guarantee anything. Lots of girls only go out to dance, eat, watch a movie, etc., and it is actually fairly common for a group of guys to buy out a couple of girls and hit the discos. No sex involved. There are places though were sex is guaranteed when you take out a girl (the Counter bars on Ratchadapisek spring to mind, I think it's ~1800 for take out, not sure if I tip would still be required). The money being spend in these places can be tremendous, the bill for a group of 4 guys staying for 3 hours in a private room with a girl each would be about 10,000 Baht. Bills twice or triple that are also not uncommon. And these amount do not include getting laid. BTW, I agree that the girls in these places are usually more attractive than the girls in the GoGo bars (of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder). Sanuk! Cheers, Chanchao Chanchao, it would be great if you could find out from your Thai friends specifically which of these places are like go-go bars in regards to the availability and willingness of the women. Madame Fluke's is on that strip of karaoke bars on Sri Donchi I believe. So the Bar Beer Center was a freelancer place? Seemed more like just beer bars to me, presumably with barfines...though I've never seen more than a couple of girls in the whole place. Pretty much a ghost town when last I looked. Not only for freelancers but once Cozy corner and spotlight closed all the girls that weren't bar-fined would be over to the Bar Beer. Five years ago when I had more hair and was a tad less heavy I even got a few freebie's on luckier nights.It's funny how places go out of fashion so quick.
