I'm not sure if Gmail itself supports POP3 or SMTP access, but maybe what you read was about this third party program that allows you to use your normal email client to retrieve Gmail.

If Gmail has opened the direct POP3 access, I could not find any reference to it. What would be required to know is the POP3 incoming mail server and the format for the login name.

Send me a PM, I have at least 6 Gmail invites to send out.

Cheers!

Hi,

I could give reference to at least 3 articles by german computer online magazines.

Servers names are pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com

No special software needed anymore. First tests found no sign of ads in the mails, according to the articles.

pop.gmail.com (SSL: yes, Port: 995)

smtp.gmail.com (Authentifocation requiredy, TLS/SSL yes, Port 465 or 587)

Send you an pm later.

Definitely POP3 access. I do it through Eudora.

Added another neat feature today, but I haven't gotten it to work right yet: little prog adds a gmail "drive" to Windoze Explorer. Shows up as another drive. You can drag-n-drop files up to 10 Mb into it- they are stored as attachments in your inbox!

USVirgin,

thanks for the invitation. I already registered.

It reminds me that i need to create an anonymous account to put up in my profile in nanaplaza...

smtp seems to work but I can't log on to the pop server. Reason might be something I found on the net 'Google will roll out POP3 support gradually over the coming weeks to Gmail users, who will be able to use the feature to download e-mail messages from Gmail servers to e-mail applications on devices such as PCs and wireless devices.'

So as a new user I might have to wait a little befor I can pop gmail.

KK,

What do you put for the settings in Eudora?

Email Address:

User Name:

SMTP Server:

- Auth Allowed ?

Secure Sockets When Sending ?

Incoming Mail -

Server:

Configeration: POP

Secure Sockeets When Receiving?

I get an error "Error reading from network. Cause: Connection closed by foreign host"

I have 5 more invites if anyone wants.

Cheers!

PM-

I use the settings exactly as laid out on this page.

Setup a new personality using those settings

Email Address: your GMail eddress Be sure to include the "@gmail.com"

User Name: ??. No "User name" field in Eudora (v 6.1.2.0, paid version). For "Log-in Name", use your eddress. Be sure to include the "@gmail.com"

SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com

- Auth Allowed ? Yes

Secure Sockets When Sending ? Yes. "Required, alternate port"

Incoming Mail -

Server: pop.gmail.com

Configeration: POP, yes

Secure Sockeets When Receiving? YES! Same as above

Intersting side note: when I checked my hotmail accounts today, my least used, my spam trap, where I send all of my have-to-register, junk requests for email adress, showed a zero percent usage. Seems they bumped it up to 250 MB storage!
