Emirates - the first airline to sign for the A380 and destined to be the largest customer with 45 aircraft on order - said today that its aircraft would bristle with ?gizmos and gadgets?.

Timothy Clark, President of Emirates, said the A380 would usher in a new era for Emirates passengers. "I cannot say yet what features our aircraft will have, but I do sense that the A380 will launch features never seen before."

He said the first A380 was scheduled to enter service on November 1, 2006. "We expect to achieve about 80 per cent capacity in a short period of time. People will go out of their way to fly on our aircraft because we will have so many gizmos and gadgets for them to try."

Emirates? choice of A380 was not based on the nationality of the manufacturer, he added, but purely on economics.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates, said: "We will try to do everything we can to maximise passenger comfort for all classes aboard the A380 - and that means showers and lounges."

He said the A380 would be the key element in the airline?s future growth. "Air travel is forecast to double in the next 14 years. There are continued constraints on traffic rights and the availability of landing slots - and, therefore, large capacity aircraft will be vital to Emirates? need to meet increasing passenger demand.

The Sheikh said that in Dubai a new US$4 billion Terminal 3 was under construction and would be completed in 2006 for the arrival of the airline?s first A380.

"Concourses 2 and 3 will have 23 gates specifically designed for the A380 for twin-deck embarking and disembarking," he said. "There will also be gate lounges able to accommodate more than 500 passengers."

He said Dubai?s airport plans also include a special cargo terminal designed with the triple-deck A380F in mind. These freighters will have a 150-tonne capacity and a range of 6,000nm and more than 10,400 km.

Hi SSD,

I watched the new airbus on swedish TV and they just showed computer models with the logos of Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. If you read the HP that SD gave the link to, you can read:

"In 2006, Singapore Airlines will be the first airline in the world to accept the A380 for commercial service. The carrier has already launched a ?first to fly A380? logo, which for maximum effect has been placed between the aircraft?s twin row of windows - one of the new aircraft?s most recognisable features."

So I guess we must wait and see which will be the first. ::

Just can't let this thread die until I've actually flown in one:

Air show attracts 480,000

PARIS -- A record 480,000 people visited the Paris Air Show which ended yesterday, organizers said, many of them wanting to see the new Airbus superjumbo A380.

Yesterday alone, some 120,000 people travelled to Le Bourget, north of Paris, to visit the world's biggest show, which opened last Monday.

The A380, the world's largest airliner, made its public debut at the show, flying for visitors every day. The giant double-decker craft will hold 555 to 840 passengers in various production versions.

About 300,000 visited the show last year.

Charles Edelstenne, the president of GIFAS, which organizes the event, described the air show as "very, very big," setting records in terms of both visitors and orders.

During the exhibition's first four days open only to professionals, 157,500 people visited the show. Over the last three days, when the doors were opened to the public, 323,000 people, or 100,000 a day, crowded in.

The funny thing about this plane is that even the CEO of Boeing wanted his picture taken in front of it during the Paris Airshow.

As Laohuli stated when oil hits $100 a barrel...

It makes you wonder how cost effective it will be to operate even with more fuel efficient engines.

Boeing has their Dreamliner coming out and it seems to be selling better than the A380. It supposed to be one of the most fuel efficient planes ever built.

Of course to fly on an A380 would be pretty cool.

An essential air-travel item will soon become a shoehorn...

There's a Qantas Aircraft Engineer living where I work, currently refitting out the seating arrangements for the older 747-200's and when that was all done, the A380's should have been taken delivery off, ready for seating configuration...he hinted that except for the most profitable long-haul routes like East-Coast to LA, expect a big economy configuration as there was no money on some routes with the premium-class seating. Another 200 hot and bothered fellow passengers on an aircraft jammed in like sardines in a can! ::

Currently its very tight seating in economy classes now.

Somehow I think the airlines who ordered this Airbus A380, will figure out new ways to make economy class really cramped, and totally fucking suck ::

Thank goodness for Eva Deluxe :)

This also mean all jets will be paying that much.

I recall that this jet is build to NOT make it a cramped airliner.

Hence 800 seats. Airbus reqconized this fact and build this jet to try and win back the flying, economy paying dick.

TIme will tell.

Shit.
