Economic steps not enough, say regions scholars, religious figures

Southern religious leaders and local scholars yesterday urged the new government to listen to locals, halt its;violent approach; to the unrest and cancel martial law.

Only one Thai Rak Thai candidate won an MP seat in the South on Sunday, a move widely interpreted as an expression of dissatisfaction with the way the grinding conflict in the South has been handled from Bangkok.

Abdulayi Awaesuemae, chairman of the Narathiwat Tourism Association, said he was concerned about Thai-Malay relations and urged the government to consider future comments carefully because the border provinces still depended on income from Malaysian tourists. (..)

Meanwhile, a police source said TRT was defeated in the South because Thaksin insisted on using Najmudin Uma as an MP candidate for Narathiwat

Constituency 3 even though he was accused of involvement in violent acts. (...)

The party also did badly because Southern voters hated TRT after the Democrats screened footage of the Tak Bai incidents, he was quoted as saying. Agriculture Minister Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, leader of the Wadah faction, appeared stressed after the Cabinet meeting and hid away in his office after the factions poor showing in the South, an office staffer said.

from THE NATION today

Former massage-parlour tycoon Chuwit Kamolvisit will make his way to Parliament for the first time :doah: after the Election Commission yesterday announced that unofficial results from party-list voting means his Chat Thai Party will win seven party-list House seats.

Chuwit is ranked sixth on Chat Thais list of party-list candidates. (...)

Chuwit became a selling point for Chat Thai in Bangkok with posters urging voters to help push & an ordinary man, as he described himself.

Chuwit sold his massage parlours before contesting the Bangkok governor election, in which he came an impressive third. He became well-known to Bangkokians after declaring that he had to pay huge regular bribes to police to keep his parlours running. While critics said he only had his own interests at heart, his action appeared to win the hearts of young voters.

Chuwit said yesterday that he would continue to expose bad people while working in Parliament.

-- i think, some people in the Parliament will not be very amused about Chuwits way in :stirthepo
