results of the first day

A

Russia-Austria 4:2

Slovakia-Belarus 2:1

Andrei Mezin was the story in Vienna April 30, making 50 saves for Belarus in his team's opener, much like his Olympic victory over Sweden in 2002. Still, Belarus lost 2-1 to Slovakia.

B

Latvia-Canada 4:6

Rick Nash scored three goals and Canada had four goals on the power play in a wild and entertaining opening game in Innsbruck on Saturday. But the Latvians showed a never-say-die attitude against the defending champions.

C

Finland - Denmark 2:1

Group B

USA-Slovenia 7:0 :whatever:

Group C

Ukraine-Sweden 2:3

Group D

Swiss-Czechia 1:3

Handing a loaded rifle to an expert sniper is not a good idea. Similarly, giving the Czech Republic power play opportunities is also likely to backfire. The Czechs scored three power play goals to defeat Switzerland 3-1 in their opener. :(

Germany-Kazachstan 1:2

Group D

Czechia - Germany 2:0

Pavel Kubina and Petr Sykora scored as the Czech Republic skated to its second win of the tournament Tuesday night, blanking Germany 2-0 in a tight battle at the Wiener Stadthalle. Jaromir Jagr left the game in the second period after apparently breaking the pinkie on his left hand after a slash from German defenseman Stefan Schauer.

Kazakhstan - Switzerland 1:2

It was mostly the Vitaliy Kolesnik Show Tuesday at the Stadthalle, as the Kazakh goalie stopped 35 of 37 shots versus Switzerland but couldn't prevent a 2-1 loss.

Martin Gerber was solid in goal for Switzerland, posting 25 saves.
