result first Semi Final from this late Afternoon

Russia - CANADA 3:4

Canada survived a scare after building a 4-0 lead and letting the Russians back into the game. The result was a thrilling victory that sends Canada in search of its third straight gold medal tomorrow night. Joe Thornton led the way offensively again for his team with three assists. He now has 16 points to lead all scorers, and linemate Rick Nash, held to a single assist, is right behind with 15 points. Martin Brodeur stopped 39 of 42 shots in the win.

"We kept making the same mistakes over and over," said Kovalev. "When it was 2-0, 3-0, we still were doing what we talked about not doing before the game."

second semi-final from tonight

Sweden-CZECHIA 2:3 after overtime

Radek Dvorak's first goal at an IIHF World Championship since 2001 gave the Czech Republic a 3-2 semi-final victory over Sweden in overtime. The result sets up a repeat of the 1996 Vienna tournament's finale, with the Czechs facing Canada for the gold medal Sunday

The opening moments were tight-checking and tactically played.

Jagr continued to be dangerous, setting up Martin Straka for a shot that went through Lundqvist, forcing the Swedish goalie to flop back and cover the loose puck. At 13:41, Jagr went down in the corner :: with an apparent injury and a stretcher was rushed out. But the superstar skated off under his own power and would return for a late period Czech man advantage.

Hi!

I hope Sweden will not call again the referee guilty after the quite shure defeat against Czechia in the forth coming game tonight.

In hindsight it is easy to answer that. The referee was good and it was a great match. Sweden lost to a vwery good team that didn't need any help. Although if you saw the match you might rethink your comment about shure defeat. The Swedes had more of the game during sudden eath and if the puck had gone their way the resuld would have been reversed. Remember that Sweden has for many years been one of the top hockey nations.

regards

game for the 3rd ranking:

Sweden-RUSSIA 3:6

The Russian Bear still has some growl left in it. With a 6-3 thrashing of Sweden at the Wiener Stadhalle on Sunday, the Russians captured the BRONZE, their first medal at an IIHF World Championship since winning silver at the 2002 tournament in Gothenburg.

The Swedes didn't look emotionally or physically engaged in this battle, while the Russians got ample space to demonstrate their dazzling skating and stickhandling skills. It was the first time since 2000 that Sweden has failed to win a medal in this tournament.

update:

CZECHIA-Canada 3:0

The Czech Republic has ended Canada's two-year streak as gold medalists with a thoroughly convincing 3-0 win. Tomas Vokoun recorded the shutout for the victors. Three different players scored for the Czechs, who were clearly the better team at the Stadthalle in Vienna on May 15, 2005.

It was the first Czech gold at the IIHF World Championship since 2001, when they beat Finland. Canada, meanwhile, missed an opportunity to three-peat and win a record-setting 24th gold medal all-time.

Jaromir Jagr changed all that at 4:13 when he skated down the right wing and stopped just before the goal line looking for the man in front. The pass failed because the man in front, Martin Rucinsky, was hauled down, but in the scrum that followed, Vaclav Prospal banged in the loose puck. It was a great start for the Czechs and a sloppy one for Canada.

Slowly but surely, the Canadians found their skates. They started winning faceoffs, moving the puck well, and maintaining puck possession in the Czech end. This led to several good chances, a whiff by Heatley point blank, a slapshot by Patrick Marleau that was kicked out by Vokoun, and a shot from in close by Shane Doan.

The Czechs started the third by killing off the penalty and then scoring a second time. Jagr had the puck on the right boards at the Canadian blueline and made a long pass across ice to Martin Rucinsky, who stepped inside the line and ripped a slapshot under Brodeur?s glove at 3:12 to give the Czechs a valuable 2-0 cushion

The Czechs played remarkable, airtight defense the rest of the way, and with Canada on a late power play, coach Marc Habscheid pulled Brodeur for the extra attacker. During a crazy scrum in front of Vokoun, Vasicek shot the puck the length of the ice into the empty net to finish the scoring with under a minute left. A scrum erupted in front of the Czech net in the dying stages, but the penalties would change nothing.

At the final buzzer, the Czechs poured off the ice in celebration. The Canadians slumped, defeated, at their bench.

IIHF celebrates best of 2005 tournament

Joe Thornton led the tournament with 16 points

Joe Thornton of Canada was named the 2005 IIHF World Championship's Most Valuable Player after tonight's game. He led the tournament with 16 points (six goals, 10 assists) and was a dominant force in Canada's march to the gold medal game.

The IIHF Directorate Awards were also announced. Best Goalie went to Tomas Vokoun (CZE), Best Defenseman to Wade Redden (CAN), and Best Forward to Alexei Kovalev (RUS).

The media-voted All-Star Team had Vokoun in goal, Niklas Kronvall (SWE) and Marek Zidlicky (CZE) on defense, and Thornton, Rick Nash (CAN), and Jaromir Jagr (CZE) at forward,

Jagr and Jiri Slegr are also the newest members of the Triple Gold Club. Previously, they had won the Olympic gold and a Stanley Cup, and tonight's World Championship gold completes hockey's most elite trio of championships.

Tomas Vokoun allowed just nine goals in eight games and also recorded two shutouts

Tonight's attendance of 7,999 pushes the total attendance to 323,974. Although this does not set a new record, the smaller arenas were close to capacity for every game in both Innsbruck and Vienna.

Although Canada finished second this year, it still retains its number one status in the IIHF's World Ranking. A complete list will be published as soon as all results are calculated.
