New Petchburi Pete
There are more and more Europeans entering the NHL all the time. I was having a beer at a small joint in E. Pattaya ... struck up a conversation with a decent guy from Finland, years younger than myself. We started talking hockey, and, of course, the NHL. I was impressed by how much he knew. He knew the names of the 6 original teams, etc., etc. He listed the greats of years gone by including Bobby Orr. The Europeans love their hockey ... they are attracted by the dollar signs to the NHL. ALHOLK
Hi! The six big hockey nations when I was young were Canada, the US, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet, Sweden and Finland. Sweden and to some extent Finland were the first to have players in the NHL in any numbers. The Soviet and Czechoslovakian players were of political reasons stopped from joining the NHL. In Sweden hockey is the second largest sport (football is #1) and NHL is reported in the press almost as much as the Swedish leagues. Today we are seeing a development where other European nations are starting to compete with the original hockey nations. When I was young Denmarks national team lost to a youth team in my birth town with the score of 13 - 1. Today they are playing for the world cup. The explanation is of course the introduction of artificall ice. 50 years ago most hockey was played on natural ice. Did you know that there is a hockey league in Thailand with about 6 teams. I read about this last winter in Bangkok Post. This sounds an awful lot like the Swedish baseball league. regards ALHOLK
