from the official webpage today:

When somebody told a NHL scout 20 years ago about a good European player, a guy who could handle the puck and score like a machine gun, could read the game like Gretzky and skate as fast as lightning, the scout's first comment was always, "Sounds nice, but is he tall, tough, and combative?"

Yet if they heard about a guy who couldn't skate, couldn't read the game, and couldn't handle the puck, but instead was big and strong and could really throw some haymakers, right away they wanted to get his phone number.

European players who were fast and smart but smaller were out of luck when it came to the NHL.

That has fundamentally changed.

The pro scouts are now watching the players at the IIHF World Championship more closely than ever. If a guy is able to compete under "zero tolerance" at this level, he can also compete in today's NHL. And it shouldn't matter if he developed his skills in a national league in Austria or Switzerland.

In the past, NHL scouts often just travelled to the World Championship because the tournament took place in nice cities like Prague, Munich or Vienna.

Now they're there because they are seriously looking for the world's best talent, wherever it may be found.

Goaltender Vitaly Kolesnik of Kazakhstan got a contract with the Colorado Avalanche because of his performance at last year's tournament in Vienna.

Swiss forward Patrick Fischer just signed a contract with Phoenix at the age of 31 because he played well at key moments for his homeland

from the website:

In a wild and entertaining game delayed 75 minutes because of bad ice, the Swiss rallied twice from two goals down in the third period to earn a 4-4 tie, but Sweden took top spot in Group B nonetheless.

----------------

The IIHF suspended four players tonight at its Directorate meeting for three separate incidents in games played on Wednesday.

The harshest penalties came as a result of an altercation off ice toward the end of the Italy-Ukraine game. Tony Iob (ITA) was suspended for three games, thus banishing him for the rest of this World Championship, and Sergii Klymentiev (UKR) for two games after they engaged in a fight in the corridor leading to the dressing rooms.

Russia's Kirill Koltsov was banished for one game as a result of physical contact with a referee during his team's game against Slovakia.

The final penalty was meted out against Belarus's Uladzimir Denisov as punishment for a hit from behind on Alexsey Litvinenko during the Belarus-Kazakhstan game. The suspensions are effective immediately.
