Old Hippie
Ok, Bottom line, I'm fucked! Reinstalled windows etc yesterday, now, some crap has hijacked the browser, and screwed Norton/firewall etc so bad, I can't connect with MSN messanger (before was Yahoo). I still get pop ups...the Messenger service ones... I can turn the firewall off, connect, and it stays up, so hopefully it works...No one to chat with last night. Had the Dell $100 tech from India on the phone for 3+ hours this morning (Missed my Thai class), tried every god damned thing under the sun, no luck getting the browser unfucked...then Norton poped up as disabled, said there was an activation issue...same shit as before...in any event, I am fed up with it...will walk away from it for a day or 2, and if the tech is right, maybe have to reinstall XP again... I thought it might have been a case of Som Nom Na, as I recently installed the Photoshop disk from Phanthip on it, but other users have no problems with it...so who knows? In any event, seriously pissing me off...why can't these spyware fucks go attack the government tax computers and give us all a refund...? Ok I need a walk and a pil... liquidflux
AdAware and Spybot are your friends. Stop looking at so much porn, that's where 99% of that shit comes from Download those 2 programs, get the most updated lists, and then run each one multiple times. For the windows popups, click Start -> Run and enter "services.msc" minus the quotes. From that list scroll down to Messenger and double click it. Change the startup type to Disabled and click OK. Go down to NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing and do the same thing. Reboot. Done. Try that and post back if things are improved.
Old Hippie
Oddly, I don't look at much internet porn...you'd think Iwould, but no, boring and crap...besides, I have tons here at home... I have adaware andspywareblaster...spybot search and destroy is good, but it seemed to get in the way at times,,,I am switching ISPs soon, and also anti virus and firewall. I am not so sure this isn't more of a software conflict thing going on here...tried everything to unfuck the hijacked browser, and nothing works...didn't happen until I updated the antivirus on line...all running o.k. now, but browser still hijacked, fewer and fewer pop ups...shut off fire wall to access Yahoo messanger, then turn it back on...will see what happens with YahooDSL...will switch to mozilla browser than as well...ok thanks for the help! torrenova
Can't you just restore the computer to an earlier time ? I make regular restore points so if I fuck something up I can go back and get myself out of the shit.
Old Hippie
yes, I can, but the problem is, I finished installing XP on Sunday, and the problems started almost immediately, so not much to really restore it to. Additionally, the Dell tech said doing a system restore could make it worse or crash it, IF itwas spyware, or a virus...we tried damned near everything, she (Dell tech) remained adament it is spyware etc...neighbor who is a techsays he is sure it is a software conflict, to doing restore won't help, might make it worse...as of now, the pop ups stopped, did disable them...but the Yahoo and browser issues still are present...on the 7th, i switch to Yahoo DSL, for $40+ a month less!!!! and will dump Earthlink and Norton security. so we will see if that does anything... As I said, the Earthlink Tech lead me down a bad path, and Dell can't seem to do much...oh and is it just me, or arethese Indian Techs lousy on the phone? Some I have no damned clue what they are saying...
liquidflux
Not really sure why you think changing ISP's will make a difference in how your computer runs. Restoring to a previous point will do nothing until you physically delete whatever programs/viruses are causing the problems. BTW, the software you get with SBC contains a shitload of monitoring programs, which are in essense, spyware.
