Nervous_Dog
Often you have to pay for oter things like food, books etc. Depends where you are 5000 - $125 US, no idea in other currancy, cheap for a years school DOG
ThaiHome
Yep, 5k about right for primary school upcountry. Uniforms, supplies, books, lunches, etc. Even more if transportation is required. Now you get some idea what there are so many people with a 6th grade education or less. How many rice farmers with 3 or 4 kids have 15-20K in their pocket. TH
cavanami
I thought that the first years of school were free? Not so? I can understand the books, uniforms, etc, but the tuition should be free?
Nervous_Dog
No - while "Free" in concept, like many things in a poor country it is not, parents have to pay for books, uniforms etc. Education, and the Education Ministry, tries hard, but it struggles, and often asks parents who have nothing to contribute In the end is $125 for a year of education, $10.50 a month,, that much to ask for? cavanami
Understand. The confusion I have is that I think I read somewhere that it is mandatory to attend school until a certain level (grade 6?). If you have no money, then how to follow the law? if there is such a law? Nervous_Dog
Some schools, like in my village, kids are happy with 2nd hand clothing, school gives free lunches, and turns a blind eye in many cases. Not all areas that lucky though. In Chaing Rai I know a school that takes hill tribe kids with no Thai Identity, even though thats illegal DOG
cavanami
So, what is the real deal? Is the tuition free? I can see the books, clothes, etc expense. Is the tuition free?
bust
I think what you need to remember is that what you are accustomed to as far as an education system is not the case in SE Asia. I do work with a couple of school up around Mae Sot and these kids would never be able to afford schooling if they had to pay. A lot are sent to school purely so they have food to eat. Perhaps the paying kids subsidize the ones who can't. Just a thought maybe someone else may knows more about that.
