New Trocodero Hotel on Suriwong. Good loc. Pool. About 700Bt

You must be joking? This shithole is one of the worst places in that area. It is a VERY old hotel that was once one of the premier places in BKK. But what time and neglect has done to it is sad.

Plenty of African men stay there, though, if that is your thing!

I think Honey Hotel is a great value at 800 Bt for a walk-in rate. And location wise it's great to be an easy walk up soi 19 away from the Asoke MRT / BTS terminus.

Two issues to watch for: 1- Avoid their ground floor rooms unless you find the sounds of motors soothing. 2- The A/C blew so cold it nearly froze my vocal cords by sunrise.

Rex Hotel near to soi 36 and across from soi 47 is a good value, too. They've got a pool. too. I think Rex goes for 800 Bt/night also.

It may be a faded glory hotel, but with a lot of history. They say it is the first hotel in Bangkok. There are photos of cars that look like model T Fords parked, in front, in the old days. It was bombed, during WW2. Run by Japs than English and American. It was even a USA military hospital for a while. They also have big rooms, available, with terraces, for about 1000 Baht. And service is good.

I've seen a lot worse, in the Sukumvit area, for more money, noisy, really dumpy and no pool. For 500-700 Baht, the Trocodero is good deal.

African men are MOST definetly not my thing, thank you. They sit around the lobby but are only given rooms on lower floors. Top floors are reserved for Falang.

It's probably soon due for the wrecking ball, I'm sure. But it's nice to get away, from the Suk Falang getto, for a while. I like Bang Rak, Yannawa neighborhoods and the shops and being near the Chao Praya.

Although the girls don't like the Africans and are scared of them. I explain, they don't come into my room. I always escort them to a cab.

It's an ecclectic old world Chinese area and they don't treat you like a falang rube like Suk. No overcharging and good food, available.

Close to Patpong, if you like that.

That being said, I stay in a really cool hotel, now, about 1,400 Bt, in the Sukhumvit area, with a lot of ameniities. With chinese cosa nosta for exccelent security. I'm always in a beautiful room, on the 14 floor wih great views, and they treat me like a gentlemen.

If I said the name, of the hotel, run entirely by Thais, you would reply, probably, with negative comments, of the clientele, not African, out of ignorance. Again, they don't come into my room. Not even on my floor, which is, again for white falang.

I don't like staying in faux midwest USA type hotels like the Federal, (1,200 Baht), although the staff is very nice.

I don't enjoy staying in hotels with old romeos wearing tank tops and shorts with their little pink wienies sticking out.

You clearly don't take criticism well. The comments were about the hotel and its environs. I have stayed there before, and a close friend stayed there each year for more than a decade b/c he has a friend near (though he is pretty much done with the hotel now).

I have been in the balcony rooms (rats running around above), as well as many others. Good luck trying to reach a guest by phone as their phone system sucks as well.

So, if you want to call an unbiased and well informed (by multiple visits there) opinion "ignorant" because it does not agree with yours, then so be it. I have heard such logic before.

Anyhow, I agree that the area (and the hotel) does have a real history to it. Heavy South Asian feel and near the water.

From 1990 to 2004 I stayed regularly in the Rex hotel, an old R&R ditch on Suk at soi 32 level. They refurbished the swimming pool 2 years ago and increased rate to 900b with one breakfast coupon.

Rooms are decent enough, problem is distance to SC or NEP, need to take the BTS, one day pass costs 100b.

I now stay far away from nightlife in a good 3 star hotel for 1100b

Trooper-

Definitely take a look at the Town Lodge - it was recommended in an earlier post. It's a very small hotel, but you won't find better value for money anywhere in BKK. Spotlessly clean, very big and comfortable bed, super friendly staff. You can find hotels where you pay less than 1,080 B a night, but you won't find one that gives you more for what you are paying.
