Beggars

bust

A long time ago on my first border run to cambo I got off the bus and made my way to that bridge. I noticed this young girl, she was about six years old with a baby no more than six months old tied to her in a sling made of a t-shirt. She was dirty and sick looking and my heart relly did go out to her but I only had 500 @ 1000 baht notes on myself so I ingnored her. Once I got the Cambo side of the b-s done I made my way back to the bridge, again I saw the girl as I passed one of those casinos so I dropped in and grabbed 100 bath in 10 baht coins. As I crossed the bridge I discretely gave her 10 and said go- fuck off, she asked for another so I flung another at her and said git-go. Any how another lad saw me and raced over, I was by this time at the Thai immigration hut on the Thai side of the border. Whilst I did my business I was left alone and had allmost forgetten those kids, then as I made my way from the hut to the bus I was basicly mobbed by a dozen kids aged up to 10 yrs of age. The closer I got the bus the more of them seemed to appear until I was freakin out! As I was about to get on the bus just to get rid of the all I threw the handfull of coin ( about 80 Baht) and just watched as the whole lot of them fought each other off to get themselves something.

I learnt a lesson.

I only give to the deserving poor, those too proud to beg.

Seriously, giving to beggars is part of Buddhist culture so I give occasionally but Suk Road beggars seem to be doing very nicely without me, I've seen them counting the take at the end of the day. There was a woman sat under one of the Sky Train entrances with two babies for a couple of years and one day I noticed they weren't the same kids as the month before when I was there. Prolly used to rent them off the neighbours.

I never give to kids at border crossings Fat Aussie, never.

Not true, we get them in my old neighbourhood which if a farang walked into was stared at, beggers everyday asking the thais.

If you watch closely in Suk, you''ll see often more thais than farangs giving to beggers.

I used to think the same about elephants, but they even go to my remote village in the Nakon Nowhere as well as odd thai only parts of bangkok.
