It can be irritating, but that's the way it is. Maybe Thais consider it more interesting to make up a "story" rather than stick with the truth? My wife, who is one of the most honest and intelligent people I've ever met, cannot acknowledge that she doesn't know something. There's always a story, usually entertaining, which when questioned further she'll sheepishly admit was more speculation than fact.
