Guy Himmaparn
My wife recently obtained her US citizenship and now has 2 passports. We're leaving soon for 7 weeks in Thailand and have a question on which passport to use upon entering & leaving LOS. If she uses her US passport only, will there be any problems with Thai Immigration regarding the length of time we're there? If she uses both will it create a problem upon our return to the US with no Thai entry/exit stamp on her US passport? Anyone with experience or expertise please comment. TIA, Guy
Julian2
If she sticks to the US passport all along she'll get a 30 day exemption then have to join you in a visa run. If she's still a Thai citizen she'll probably have to enter and leave on her Thai passport, that's the law in most countries. When you get back to the US just flash the Thai passport if they ask where she's been. If there's any problems they'll just throw her into Guantánamo Bay for a couple of years while they work it out. Nervous_Dog
Yes, she can stay only 30 days! She MUST enter on her Thai passport, was told this a while back as it is a rule Thais must enter and leave on their thai passport, I have Thai Mate who did the same as your wife suggests by accident, entered on his Australian passport (was late at night) When he left Thailand 5 weeks later had to pay a OVERSTAY FINE!!! Dumsoda
Don't know the US requirements, but discussed the same issue with Australian Gov't Depts. My wife could leave Oz on Oz passport and enter LOS on Thai Passport (To avoid the 30 day Visa situation), leave LOS on Thai Passport ans re- enter Oz on Oz passport.....NO PROBLEMS ONLY ISSUE If, by any chance, she encountered ANY problems in LOS that required assistance by Australian Embassy, she would get ABSOLUTELY NO HELP, as the Australian Government would have no record of this Australian Citizen entering LOS. Check also the validity of the "RE ENTRY" Visa in her Thai Passport. In the Oz model, an Australian Passport (meaning Citizenship) over rides ALL previous Visas, so any previous re entry visa (Normally a 5 year life span) will be null and void after an Oz passport is issued. shygye
Thailand does not recognize dual citizenship so just show only the Thai passport. A USA citizen must enter the US with the USA passport.
Nervous_Dog
Thailand DOES recognise dual citizens, law changed in the late 90's. Thats how my Thai mate has an Aussie passport, originally he had to give up being thai, then Mid late 90's they allowed dual so he and famly took back their thai passports. Nervous_Dog
DS read my story about 2 years ago? wife and Kingjoe applied for Australian Tourist visa's, one of them was refused! Guess who, Jing-joe, by law she HAS to enter Australia on her Aussie passport, illegal for her to get a visa in her thai as she holds dual nationality. elef
5 years ago you could read on the thai attorney-generals website that there wasn't anything in the thai legislation stopping dual citizenships. Still TGs from scandinavia were forced to pay bribes of 5,000 if immigration officers found out they didn't have visas anymore in their thai passports. Also a TG living here had to ask for visas for her 2 swedish-thai children with just swedish passports for staying 6 weeks. After that H M the King told in a speech that all thais are thais regardless of what passport they have, so next time this lady asked for visas from the embassy in Stockholm they said "don't need". If we compare with the story above I guees it's just for minors traveling with mother with thai passport.

Then there's no problem DS, that's the standard amount of help any Australian Embassy hands out to it's citizens overseas regardless of what passport they use. elef
One further thing the aussie embassy isn't notified by thai immigration if an australian enters Thailand. Expats are probably recommended to register with the embassy but for sure not tourists.
