Flashermac
Never once heard it called "Puff the Magic Dragon". To the groundpounders, Spooky or sometimes Snoopy was its name. Only times I ever saw them in action -- maybe 6 or 8 times -- was after we had been hit with a ground or mortar attack. By the time the flyboys got there, the bad guys had already gone and everything was over. Presumably, the gunship saw movement and fired at it, unless they were just shooting up the woods for the hell of it. Nothing like a gunship in action. You'd see the line of tracers snaking down. Then maybe 30 seconds to a minute later, you'd hear the gunfire. That time one fired on us, the First Sergeant decided to pop some illumination rounds with our 60 mm mortar to show where we were. A message suddenly came in on the radio: "Whoever is firing that mortar, knock it off. That last round nearly took our wing off!" Top replied, "You stop shooting at us, and we'll stop shooting at you."
Old Hippie
I think "Spooky" was the AC130 and "Puff" was the C47, which I believe was a modified DC3.
..
Here's a video of a Spooky in action in Iraq. The ground troops use the laser to paint where they want the gunship's fire to land. And if yer really a geek, here's a bunch of info and "where are they now" stuff. Cheers, SD
Flashermac
There were a few planes equipped with 105 mm howitzers to use against NVA truck convoys and armour on the HCM Trail. Imagine the recoil of that gun!
