Morocco

I looked back through all the topics since 2003 and, not surprisingly, couldn't find anything about Morocco.

However as I'm moving there on Thursday I thought I might as well chance it and see if anyone has any experience of the place.

I'll be based in Rabat, near Casablanca, but will probably have to travel fairly often to other cities.

Spent some time in Tangier many years ago. Was pretty full on then but not sure about now. As Tangier is a bit of a tourist destination probably didn't get to see the real Morroco. But was still like a scene from Arabian Nights. The thing I remember most vividly was when we were departing for Algeseris the ferry was running incredibly late (1-2 hours). I went to the one of the staff to enquire what time would the ferry leave to which he replied "in Allah's time" Still laugh when I think about it as it was the perfect answer.

All the larger discos in Rabat and Casablanca will have freelancers about, mostly targeting wealthy businessmen so expect highball quotes for services.

There was a well developed brothel scene when I was there years ago, not particularly obvious but available to those who asked the right people. Things were pretty relaxed then and I never had a problem but I understand that it is quite a bit tenser now with more radicals walking around.

Casablanca is just a big city, not that old and not a lot to see, pretty much the same for Rabat but Meknez is a real jewell and worth visiting as are some of the old Spanish enclaves on the Northwest coast.

Tangier and Marrakech may well be a tourist pits but are still fascinating places to walk around. The biggest problem is getting swarmed by teenage "guides" and souvenere shop touts who dog you all over town. The best way to handle them is to pick a big, mean looking one and pay him to shut-up and keep the rest away.

Go to Essaouira on the coast.

Don't be bothered to stop in El Jedida. There's fuck all in El Jedida apart from the Spanish Cistern where part of Othello, Orson Welles version, was filmed.

Marrakech is alright but a little crummy and the souk was tedious.

Essaouira (can't spell the place) is easy to get to. Get yourself over to Casablanca, take train to Marrakech and taxi from there. Train costs very little. Taxi not much.

A few years ago I got the bus up from Essauoira to Casa and it seemed to stop at every junction for the conductor to let on his "friends" who were obviously paying him a backhander.

In Ess, you get the freshest seafood grilled on the quayside. There's lots of little groovy woodworking stalls in the little passages near the walls nearest to the quay. They have a few places that specialise in north african music/instruments which are worth checking out. Tiny little jewellery quarter. And you've got to try an avocado smoothie and pigeon pastilla. Scrumptious.

If you're a little more athletic they also do kitesurfing on the beach towards the old castle on the way to Jimi Hendrix village or whatever it was called.
