All they have on their minds is money?

Money is however a fundemental part of Thai identity....if you have a lot then you supposedly look good, or at least better than others....FACE!

I was taught money doesn't make you happy...my family is living proof of that, however many people just don't 'get it'....money is a temporary fix, that's all.

Thalenoi, i think your lady was just joking...i've heard the same from many and used the same 'humour' against Thais on numerous occasions...yeah, it's a lame attempt at humour, but i never claimed i wasn't lame

DNA,

I read you, but she has all what she needs and more, sometimes it just sounds not enough...sigh

I know it is very thai, I wished it was different.

Reference to money shows up too many times for my taste.

I have other things to care about in life than money, not so for her I am affraid. :doah:

I will have to live with that, hey :(

Thalenoi, as one of the guys who knows your story I'd say that there are still some very tiny desires/habits left from the old life. She didn't wanted that kind of life and decided to go with the guy she loves! I am sure it sometimes hits her and she thinks "what if..." but that is nothing to worry or being angry about. You married a thai woman and now you get some thai reactions! :) Your story is still one of my favorites!

...hence, money takes a different role/importance in many places.....

The girls I met in East Europe of course liked money and the things that money can buy, yet most were VERY low maintenance and had VERY FEW materialistic expectations. Most of all, Slavics women associate money with success, success with manliness and manliness with sex appeal.

So what are the socialist welfare programs in your European country that make sure you donâ??t have to worry about money? Do those same programs exist in Thailand or even the US?

I doubt it.

Please try to objective in your judgments and not let your cultural ethnocentrism get in the way.

My friend in Berlin, Germany got laid off from his job and collected 60% of his pay for 2 years...in the USA we get about 40% for 6 months.

Better social system in Europe, but it should be as they have been paying like $4 USD for a gallon of gas...so can not easily compare.

I watched Dr. Phil in tv tonight and in tonight's show they had women guests that indetified themselves as goldiggers. Fuck hell there are even agencies in the US that train girls how to catch a rich husband :D . Does this show represent the typical American?

Actually many of my collegues have been visiting the States and many times almost the freaking first question is how much do you earn when they meet new people

I think both middle classes and upper-middle classes worry and stress about money just as much as lower classes...

It is only their perceived needs and wants are different. One is worried about putting food on the table and paying monthly rent and the other groups stress about college education, financing that sports car, keeping up with the newest trend, etc.

Everyone worries about money with the same stress but for different reasons.....

I would say that is very unusual and being born and working my whole professional life in america, asking about how much one makes is a taboo...

I cannot think of one person ever asking or hearing about ever asking about how much one makes under social conditions...

One will ask in the initial series of questions what does one do but never how much one makes. That is left to extrapolate based on the occupation given....

Direct questions about money, age, health, phone numbers, home address, SS#, ethnicity, etc., are viewed as private and personal matters and usually are not asked in questions and people are reluctant to give out...

I have always viewed them as social taboos and americans put a big emphasis on privacy and protection of that privacy. In a weird way, equality or the perception of equality figures into that as well...
