I need advice from the guys who have done it or who have seen first hand.

We are going back to the family home in Nov. and have a Thai. style wedding at the family house. We are allready married now here in the states. :)

This is mainly for show with the family to let them look good. No Not Issian :neener: This will be in Ratchaburi. Have father's family coming from south thailand.. My wife keeps saying they have big money.

Any how. What is all to be expected? She wants to wear Thai. wedding clothes. Have 9 monks. Band party :_party::beer::beer: She states it will be an all day deal. We have talked about sin sot for mom and dad. We reached a deal on that. Every month we send money home for the family, as does her brother and 2 sisters that work. They all have good Thai. jobs. np4p jobs  What we are going to do is give them 4 months of money for sin sot. Good amount of show money considering she is old. 37 :shhh::grinyes: but never married and no kids. I know that in the morning I think I have to pay bribe money to get past the people?? is that right? Please help me out here guys. We are paying for the food and band plus the drinks. I stated that we will spend alot of money and she says no, we spend good money and make a lot of money from them.As she gives me that thai sly smile

The next kicker is that she has convinced my 65 year old mother to come over for wedding. Guess who's footing that bill?:( Any comments. Nice ones please.

Passingthru69,

Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. I hope you have a great day. I know I had when I got married. There's not a lot of info to be added though. It seems you are already well informed. Just sit back and enjoy the day, that is far better than thinking about. Only thing: During the wedding ceremony with the monks, be prepared to sit your ass on the floor for about two hours with your feet pointing backwards. After all, it is not polite to point those shoes towards those monks. That part was torture for me, and I hope you fare better. :)

Married a couple of months ago.......for £400 ALL IN :) (I love saying that!)

Anyway, we didn't do any budhist temple stuff (with neither of us being budhist their did not seem much point :smirk: )

So having established that I am NOT an expert :D my answers is........From what I have gathered over the years their really do not seem to be any rules, even for the locals. Sometimes Zero is ok, sometimes it is bad.....

My attitude to the Sinsot stuff is a lot more relaxed than previously, I would be quite prepared to pay money as long as it was not stupid sums (according to my income) and then just treat it as part of the wedding costs / a way to keep the inlaws happy (and ne I would cut expenses elsewhere accordingly if it did not come back - apparently it does not always). Sometimes Farang think too mutt......in any event find out whether the cash envelopes is normal for her circle of family, and if so just keep a not of who gave and who did not - for future reference, paying Sinsot could turn out to be quite a cheap way of knowing where you stand with various members of family.

Unless that is I was marrying into a Thai family that brought something to the table for ME - for me that would mean her father DOES own a brewery :D , the fact that the family was simply "respectable" and even moderately succesful does not to me make them valuable if I do not intend to live in Thailand......even if the family think themselves "a catch".

Families who LIVED off the earnings of their daughters P4P activities? well, I might pay some minimal sinsot - just to keep folk happy for the day - but it would not be any sign of "respect".........

Passingthru, enjoy the day and I am sure that your mother will.

I thought the "Bribe Money" was more of a Chinese Tradition than a Thai one, I may be wrong. Basically your wifes close relatives will be protecting her and you and your "Best Man" will have to cut a path to her. In my case this was relatives blocking the path with Gold Chains, and in order to get past each checkpoint a red envelope was handed over containing anywhere between 100 and 500 Baht.

As for Sinsod, something I was very much against initially but I later found out (in my case anyway) it was just for show. We agreed upon a round figure of 1 Million Baht in Crisp 1000 Baht notes, my father in law matched it. Within ten minutes of the Sinsod being given photographs etc the money was back in my bank account.

The Chains and Sinsod take place at the morning engagent ceremony, after the sinsod it is usual to offer gifts to all of your guests, nothing expensive in our case it was Silk for my parents , towels for less relevent guests and a one baht gold chain for my wifes sister.

After the engagment you are escorted back to your house (Hotel Suite in our case) by all the guests, the person leading the way will have a Red Lantern to light the path, after 10-15 minutes all the guests will depart allowing you and your wife to consumate the marriage.

Fast forward 3 hours and it is now the night time celebration, this is where all the friends turn up as well as the relatives. After spending what seems like an eternity greating guests and having photographs taken outside the main function room the couple will be announced and walk up to the stage where the blessings take place.

As for the cost, trust your wifes sly grin, she knows the game. The traditional wedding gift is the Red Envelope. We had our wedding at the Dusit Thani Bangkok and I think the total cost was 650-700 K Baht, the contents of the Red Envelopes was around 900K baht, it more than paid for itself.

As I said, my experiences are from Thai-Chinese wedding ceremony so some of what I say may not hold true for traditional Thai.

Just typing this reply, remembering our wedding day put a smile on my face. Enjoy every minute of it mate.
