cavanami
Doing my "Cheap Charlie" visa run...take the Bangkok bus to Bang Na, on the Bang Trat road and at the Big C there, take the casino bus (100 baht) to Poi Pet (Cambodia), about a 3 ~ 3 1/2 hour ride. Pay $20 USD for the Cambodia visa at the border, walk in and then out of Cambodia. Go to the casino for a free buffet lunch. Walk back into Thailand and get you 30 day visa. Walk back to the parking lot where the bus is, go back to Bangkok, another 100 baht. Or, say overnight at a casino, gamble, paople watch, etc. Then take the bus back the next day. steffi
Which days can this run be done then? Any threads?
Old Hippie
It can be done all days, *BUT* The border does close at night (forget when, sorry) so if you get there late, you will be screwed and have to stay. I think www.talesofasia.com may have current details on all of this. I went in the morning, first bus (more less express) from Mor chit, left around 03:30, cost was maybe 200bht? took 3 hours or so to poi phet, then a tuk tuk to the border, visa, Thai and Cambodian customs was on my way to Siem Reap by 8:30. If you get the first bus, go right to the border, get out of Thailand, and get the Cambodian visa, turn right around and walk back, no dilly dally, you could be back on a bus to BKK in 1.5-2 hours, avoiding the crowds At the Thai customs office later in the day, especially as the big visa run buses start showing up...... cavanami
My friend living in that area does the run every few months, no problem.
Old Hippie
Yeah, it is quick passing early, it bogs down later in the day. Line cutting is a pain in the ass on the Thai side, Some times tour guys can get you through for 200bht...but risky, as they take your passport... Nervous_Dog
I think the border is open to farangs all night, but for Thai's on the 3 day house paper visit it is closed. DOG
Flashermac
For anyone considering a run to Laos, get to the Thai embassy well before noon. That way you can get your visa the next morning. Get to the embassy after noon, and you'll have to wait two days!
bbull
And if only doing a 30 day visa run make sure of that onward air tickt!
fruity
I went to Friendship Bridge last Monday. Flew to Udon on AirAsia and got a 150b "limousine" to Nong Khai. Visa fee was US$31 (they charge extra $1 on certain days for "OT"), but some nationalities are charged different amounts. Visa only takes 10 minutes to process, make sure you bring USD as they rip you off on the THB exchange rate. I went to Vientaine which is pretty close by. From the "morning market" you can buy VCD's for 5b!!! DVD's for 30b!!! Went back to Nong Khai to buy some nam neung (aroy maak) to bring back to Bangkok. Was only gone for 26 hours this trip (it wasn't a visa run). Also, went to Aranyaprathet last Friday (border crossing with Cambodia at Poipet). I departed earlyish and got there by car in 2hours flat (260km) so must be the closest place from Bangkok to travel to a border. Did some wholesale shopping at their Golden Gate Plaza, some lines are substantially cheaper than Bangkok. You can see all the used bags, shoes and Levi's which were donated by American's to Cambodia, which are then sold by the Cambodians for cash! Again this wasn't a visa run, just a day trip. I've been to the border crossing with Koh Kong several times too. In summary, forget about Laos if you only want the visa as it's further away, more expensive and more hassle. Cheers,
