TheCorinthian
Thank God I'm not in uniform now. Serving in the Middle East these days is enough to give anyone a nervous breakdown. A curse on Bush for getting the US so deeply involved in the place. It does that. But they are not kidding when they say attacks against us have gone down. I have not been shot at since I got back and that just floors me. Heck, we even have tea now with people I had to search daily two months ago. We do still have a massive amount of Iraqi on Iraqi violence, but they have learned to cut it out when ever we are around. We tried to check but I cant find any numbers for how many killed each other under Saddam but from talking to the people it is apparently a lot. But that aside, is right. Right now Oil makes the world go round and much of the oil is here. Not just the US but the rest of the world will not let, what? 50% of their energy held hostage like what happened in 1972-73- which is about the first time the Arab nations figured out the power they had over us. Until we out technology the need for oil, they will continue to have it.

Flashermac
p.s. Why didn't Bush get to wear a burnoose and dress up like T. E. Lawrence too.
chuckwoww
So pay 'em not to kill each other and everybody go home. That is basically the plan but it won't be quite that simple. The US badly wants that Hydrocarbon Law passed. It's supposed to be a way of sharing oil revenues. Of course what it really is it's a way for Big Oil to get contracts and 70% of revenues. The Iraqis are supposed to squabble over what's left and ignore the permanent US bases. A burnoose is actually Berber head gear. You're probably thinking of the kefia. Not sure how that is a bribe from the US. Sounds like extortion as the author says. And we don't see that much now. That was an AQI thing. Mostly now the tribes would rather have the school or the clinic. Either way, I would not have a problem paying them not to kill each other. How much would you like to send to help? [/quote'] Maybe bribes isn't the right word. It's all just business as usual. The insurgents are being paid, in Anbar province, not to kill Americans but I think they are still killing each other. Violence is down in parts of Baghdad because Americans are finally protecting the last remaining Sunnis from Shia death squads. The point is to show that the surge is working. The US taxpayer, and foreign T.Bill buyers, foot the bill. I help pay for the whole fiasco indirectly through higher gas prices.
