Uni Scholarships & Loans

My wife's boy was number one in his school of 2400 upcountry.

He was honored with a room filled with his awards over his high school

career and 5 members of the MoE came one day to his school to

evalutate him in competition for The Queen's award for the best

9 students in Thailand. He then was honored by receiving recognition

and personally handed a plaque by the Prime Minister of Thailand

in Bangkok last year.

When he went to apply to Uni's, the big schools [Chula, Tammasat] turned him down

for some reason. Yet he was never offered a scholarship nor a loan

at any of the other schools. Something seems wrong here.

In the US, many schools would have been tripping over themselves

offering scholarships and loans to have him enroll.

My question is what is the status of scholarships and loans to poor

farm country students. It seems to me most would need help of some

kind, otherwise few would be able to attend.

Did his school advisors let him down or is financial help not that

common in Thailand ?

Any information or personal experiences will be appreciated.

Thanks

Wow, that sounds bad...

Not helping, but i've worked with many Chula and Tammasat students. Some have been bright, quite a few have not...and seemingly came from well to do or 'the right' families. Maybe i'm being cynical...maybe not...

Could you enquire as to the reasons for him being refused entry? What subject was he seeking to study?

Kesetsart seems to have a lot of the brightest students nowadays. I really don't rate Tammasat.

I have no idea but I thought Chula was supposed to be the place students like him could get into without the drama's your having now.

That all said, if he is this good, try and get him into a good uni, and aim to get him on track to studying overseas, he's talent will shine there and he can come home a star.

All these places are oversubscribed with extremely bright students or those who can afford a generous donation to the institute. You also have to pass their entrance examinations.

As for student loans, you have to apply for them, not wait for them to fall into your lap. They are oversubscribed too.

Doubtless he has done very well in his upcountry school. The key word here is 'upcountry'.

Sorry to sound like a wet blanket, but if you want him to have a good education, you will have to be prepared to pay for it.
