I had several good friends who had served in WWII in New Guinea, all sadly gone now. One of them told me about the time some Papuans watched American cartoons - Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse, Porky Pig etc. He said the "natives" were absolutely amazed that those clever Americans had managed to teach animals to talk!

Fidel, Wat Tamagai as Flash said, indeed they doo look like UFO's, or turn them sideways ;) Also they are conforming to strict Thai Buddhist rules on building a Stupa.

They have their own 24/7 TV show, and HUGE halls, over 1 kilometre looooooong!

Cargo Cults in New Guinea? When I was in PNG working I had a very smart driver who was studying engineering part time, not a lot younger than me at the time.

He was very modern, but as he himself told me "Don't expect too much from Papua New Guineans, remember when I was a kid, not more the 10 years ago, I believed the Helicopter was a God! Now I study computers!

Great place, amazing place, sad place,
