sayjann
Yesterday (Friday) i had a visit from the Police. they had had a tip-off about the downloading of Child Pornography and it seemed my IP Adress was on the list....... the Officer who called said that he was not concerned that it was me as he had a further 6 addresses within a mile radius of my home. he seemed to think it was someone cruising the area and finding IP Addresses without password security and using their internet connection to hack in and download. all the images said to be from my IP Address were downloaded on 1 Day in Aug 07 and since then i have bought a new PC. i still have the old PC and was willing for him to take it away and investigate. after all if i had done wrong the Police would have found anything deleted and known it was me. he declined the offer and he thought i was innoncent but obviously had to complete his inquiries before any decisions made. he told me that it was a common problem and not unlawful. he said that whenever he switched on his laptop a list of IP Addresses came up which he could use instead of his own. it's frightening to be visited by the Police about a matter like this. i asked to be kept informed about the investigation because the longer i hear nothing the more i will be concerned. be careful Guys and Gals and make sure all your security is top notch. Bangkoktraveler
Do you have a wireless network? And if you do, what protection are you using?
khunsanuk
Hi, The cop was referring to 'open' wifi connections (i.e. those not protected with a password). You cannot 'find' IP addresses that you can use. You *can* find unprotected wifi connections and use those to connect to the Internet. Sanuk! cavanami
I don't think I would freely offer for the police to take my PC away...maybe nothing on it when they took it but what if they are pressured to make an arrest? suddenly something could appear on the farang's PC!!! Just my paranoid thinking...

sayjann
Cavanami. the Computer i am willing for them to take away has not been used since Jan 2nd. i've only kept it because there are still some files on it that i want to transfer to my new PC eventually. it seems over 2000 images were downloaded on one occasion, not over a course of time. i think it would be improbable for someone from the Police to spend time putting that amount of images onto my old PC. chatting to a friend today and she said something that might be worrying. a friend of hers downloaded adult porn in some sort of mass download, not individual images. it seems he never got round to viewing all the images and it turned out that child porn was included in the package. for some reason he was investigated and convicted and sent to jail for 9 Months. i have no concerns about what is on my old and new PC's. but 2nd thought's,i have downloaded some of OH's images and i will be embarrassed if the Police see those...... That is a serious possibility. This has happened in one case in the Netherlands, too. It was like a couple of images in a serious collection, and it coud have easily been some extra catch, like one dolphin that comes in with your tuna. keekwai
I'm skeptical of the innocence claim. When a person's freedom is at stake its quite easy to determine their preferences based on history retained by ISPs, confiscated computers' history, search history image files. sayjann
i have never knowingly downloaded and kiddie porn, but not to say it is not on my PC or anyone else's. i have had links pop up which lead to pay for kiddie porn but am not interested and just delete the link. but i suppose the history is on my PC and i would be at risk of being investigated. drogon
Yes except when someone installed a backdoor (remote access) on your computer..... When I started browsing internet we received a letter from the provider stating our connection was to be cut for having hacked into someone else's PC. Which was not the case....Since working as IT consultant I realized how easy it is for competent hackers to do it... My brother who is only 22 considers hacking as a hobby (hacking in the not harmful way) and succeeded entering my bank's core system in just 2 hours. (and this bank ranks at the 14th position in the world)
