Long Neck Tribespeople Setup Local Tourist Attraction

For many years now the Karen long-neck hill tribes have been a tourist drawcard in the north of Thailand, but now a tour company has decided to bring the hilltribes down to earth and has established a community near Pattaya. A total of 19 Karen with long necks and 11 other hilltribe people have been set up in a makeshift village at Khao Cheejan in Na Jomtien sub-district. As is to be expected a number of shops selling tourist trinkets and clothes have been erected while the Karen sit about like exhibits in a zoo. A number of tourists, both Thai and foreign, were seen visiting the village and expressed surprise at seeing the Karen so far south. Khun Weerasak, the manager of the tour company that established the site, said he had permission from the Interior Ministry to bring the Karen to work in Thailand.

There was a feature in the papers a few months ago about the long-necks, an unusually good one. It seems that most are actually Burmese refugees (thus "permission" from the Interior Ministry is required for them to leave their refugee camps) -- like other Burmese refugees living in the camps, they've been offered an opportunity to resettle in the United States and elsewhere, since return looks unlikely. However, girls who have chosen to resettle abroad have not been given the necessary exit permission by the Ministry of Interior, which wants to maintain them as an (involuntary) tourist display. With few choices, some girls are reportedly taking a brave route: remove the rings, and become just another Karen refugee with no value to the Thais! They won't be able to generate income for their families (or 'employers') anymore, but if they can get abroad they can get a normal job and get on with life...

If you want to check out freaks in Pattaya, don't go see the Karen or the Ripley's believe it or not, just sit in any bar and watch the white folks walking past -- and don't worry, most of us don't bite...

Tourist Police arrest Long Neck Hill-Tribe illegal workers in Sattahip.

Following orders from Police Major General Atagrit, the National Commander of Tourist Police, Police Captain Suprapan, a sub-inspector at Pattayaâ??s Tourist Police Station led an operation to arrest a group of illegal immigrants thought to be working at Kow Shee Jang in Sattahip. The group of illegal immigrants who come from the mountains in North Thailand are not classed as Thai Nationals and are easily recognizable by their long necks covered by metal rings. The Galiang People also known as the Karen Long Neck Hill-tribe can often be seen in Thailand but they are not permitted to work in Thailand without work permits and visas. The team of Tourist Police Officers located a Galiang village at the location which replicates their dwellings in the mountains of North Thailand. It has been set up as a Tourist attraction. A total of 11 Galiang People were arrested and taken to the Immigration Office for deportation. Khun Wirasak, a Thai national, was arrested in connection with the Galiang People and was charged with harboring illegal immigrants.
